Position Summary

The Heavy Equipment Operator I is responsible for safely and proficiently operating heavy equipment on various TRWD projects as well as keeping the equipment clean and in good working order. Equipment Operators work as part of a team to assist with other duties such as vegetation maintenance, structure inspection and repair, and manual labor.

Essential Functions And Responsibilities

  • Work with heavy equipment such as uniloader, backhoe, water truck, grapple truck, ag tractor, gradall, and dump truck
  • Communicate equipment mechanical issues to fleet mechanics
  • Clean, maintain and inspect all equipment daily
  • Locate underground services, such as pipes or wires, prior to beginning work
  • Perform data entry on work orders and for timekeeping
  • Learn and follow safety regulations
  • Maintain clean work environment
  • Interact and coordinate with other TRWD personnel
  • Perform construction projects including, but not limited to, building fences, pouring and finishing concrete, carpentry, and painting
  • Perform maintenance and inspections of floodgates, dam, and spillway structures
  • Perform general maintenance of TRWD structures and grounds including pipeline and floodway
  • After hours Emergency Response
  • Maintain familiarity with strategic district levels of service
  • Continuous improvement monitoring and innovation efforts
  • Perform other duties as required

Required Experience

  • One (1) year of experience working with heavy equipment and ability to show proficiency operating two (2) of the following pieces of equipment: uniloader, backhoe, water truck, grapple truck, ag tractor, gradall, heavy haul lowboy, and dump truck
  • Light mechanical knowledge to communicate equipment issues to fleet mechanics
  • Knowledge and understanding of grade
  • Prior experience using a weed eater and/or standard mower
  • Pulling and backing up utility trailers
  • Ability to accomplish one of the following:
  • Operate a tractor
  • Grind, cut, or weld
  • Light fleet mechanical repairs

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid Texas drivers license

  • Valid Texas CDL Class A or B with hazmat (H) and tanker (N) endorsements and without restriction E

  • Physical demands:While performing duties of job, employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hand to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; talk and hear. Employees must regularly lift and/or move up to 80 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Work environment:While performing the duties of this job, the employee typically resides out in the field exposing the employee to weather conditions prevalent at the time. This position will also work in confined spaces, on waterways such as lakes or rivers, at various heights and on slopes with a 2:1 grade.
