Tarbiyah Academy is a K-8 non-profit, independent, international, Islamic Academy located in Elkridge, Maryland. Committed to holistic education and academic excellence, the Academy provides a nurturing environment that integrates Islamic values and principles with rigorous academics. As an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, Tarbiyah Academy offers the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the Middle Years Programme (MYP), reflecting its dedication to fostering inquisitive, knowledgeable, and caring young American Muslim leaders.


Tarbiyah Academy is seeking a versatile, mission-aligned, and inquiry-minded Middle School Mathematics and Science Teacher to support the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) within a holistic Islamic educational framework.


About the Role


The Middle School Mathematics and Science Teacher is responsible for supporting the delivery of a rigorous, inquiry-based academic program for Grades 6 through 8 aligned with the MYP Mathematics and Sciences subject groups. We are seeking an educator with content strength across both disciplines who is excited about the possibility of growing into a dual-subject role over time.


In the first year, this teacher will work primarily with middle school mathematics students in close collaboration with the lead Mathematics Teacher, co-planning, co-teaching, and supporting small-group and individualized instruction. As enrollment grows and program needs evolve, the role is expected to expand into MYP Sciences instruction in subsequent years. We are looking for someone who is energized by this kind of growth and ready to build alongside us.


The Middle School Mathematics and Science Teacher must be both a content expert and a relational educator. The ideal candidate brings strong knowledge in both mathematics and science, skill in designing engaging investigations and problems, and the patience and presence required to support adolescents through one of the most formative stages of their development.


As a teacher in an Islamic institution, the Middle School Mathematics and Science Teacher embodies and cultivates a spiritually grounded classroom culture with a commitment to ongoing tazkiyah, intentional self-reflection and spiritual growth. This educator understands that effective teaching requires continuous inward work to sustain clarity, humility, and resilience.

This teacher must be deeply committed to a holistic Islamic education, one that integrates academic rigor, character formation, spiritual development, and identity-building within a coherent Islamic worldview.


The Middle School Mathematics and Science Teacher reports to the Head of Middle School and works in close collaboration with the lead Mathematics Teacher, the Director of Teaching and Learning, fellow middle school teachers, the Learning Specialist, the School Counselor, and other school leaders to ensure coherence, alignment, and excellence.


Responsibilities


Instructional Excellence in Mathematics (Year One Focus)

  • Co-plan and co-teach middle school mathematics in close collaboration with the lead Mathematics Teacher
  • Support small-group instruction, targeted interventions, and enrichment opportunities aligned with student needs
  • Contribute to the development of MYP Mathematics unit planners using the key and related concepts, global contexts, and statements of inquiry
  • Assess student learning using the MYP Mathematics assessment criteria: Knowing and understanding, Investigating patterns, Communicating, and Applying mathematics in real-life contexts
  • Cultivate mathematical fluency, reasoning, problem-solving, and the ability to communicate mathematical thinking clearly
  • Differentiate instruction to support both standard and extended mathematics learners
  • Provide high-quality scaffolding and timely, actionable feedback
  • Help build a positive, growth-oriented mathematical mindset in every student


Pathway into MYP Sciences

  • Contribute to science instruction and planning as needs arise, with the expectation of expanding into a fuller MYP Sciences teaching role in subsequent years
  • Support science labs, investigations, and field-based learning experiences as needed
  • Participate in MYP Sciences planning conversations and professional development to build readiness for an expanded role
  • Stay current in both mathematics and science pedagogy to support a flexible, dual-subject contribution to the middle school program


IB Framework & Islamic Integration

  • Deliver instruction aligned with the IB Middle Years Programme across mathematics and, in time, sciences
  • Use formative and summative assessments to guide instruction and differentiate for diverse learners
  • Integrate connections to Islamic mathematical and scientific heritage and the role of these disciplines in understanding Allah's creation
  • Foster international-mindedness and the development of the IB learner profile
  • Engage students in reflection and ownership of their learning


Classroom Culture & Student Development

  • Create a structured, joyful, and emotionally safe classroom environment where students feel free to take intellectual risks, make mistakes, and persevere through challenge
  • Establish and maintain clear routines and expectations, including the safe use of any equipment or materials
  • Implement positive behavior systems aligned with school-wide expectations
  • Support students' social-emotional growth and character development
  • Foster belonging, dignity, and respect within the classroom community
  • Maintain an organized, inspiring, and well-resourced classroom


Family Partnership & Communication

  • Build strong relationships with families through proactive and transparent communication
  • Participate in three-way conferences and student-led conferences
  • Provide clear and informative progress reports
  • Partner with parents to support student growth academically, socially, and emotionally


Professional Collaboration & Growth

  • Actively participate in collaborative planning and professional learning communities, particularly with the lead Mathematics Teacher and the broader middle school team
  • Engage in IB professional development and ongoing teacher growth in both MYP Mathematics and Sciences
  • Contribute to accreditation and authorization processes
  • Seek continuous improvement in instructional practice and technology integration
  • Offer at least one extracurricular activity per week
  • Participate in school events, field trips, and co-curricular responsibilities

Qualifications


Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Science, Education, or a related field from an accredited U.S. university
  • Demonstrated content knowledge in both mathematics and science
  • Authorization to work in the United States
  • Strong command of English, orally and in writing


Preferred

  • Certification or coursework in either Mathematics and Science Education
  • Master's degree in Mathematics, Science, Education, or a related field
  • Experience teaching middle school students
  • Experience in independent or Islamic schools
  • Experience co-teaching or working in collaborative instructional models
