Facilities Custodian
The Facilities Custodian at Tao of Clay performs daily and monthly maintenance tasks to ensure a clean, safe, and functional studio environment. Responsibilities include following a structured cleaning protocol, maintaining facility upkeep, organizing a cleaning supply inventory, and being available for special events and emergency responses.

We offer a diverse range of courses in throwing, hand-building, and glazing/firing, led by our skilled in-house instructors and guest artists.

Responsibilities
Cleaning & Upkeep:
- Studio Opening & Maintenance: Open the studio four days a week, ensuring that all areas—including the studio, bathrooms, shop, and member spaces—are clean, organized, and ready for use. Perform general custodial duties, including trash removal, cleaning bathrooms and shop spaces, and managing clay dust through daily sweeping and mopping. Handle laundry for clay aprons and rags, and operate the electric mop as part of the daily routine.
- Monday Deep Clean: Conduct a thorough weekly deep clean every Monday, including moving tables to clean floors, sanitizing areas outside the regular daily schedule, and attending to offices and gallery spaces to maintain a high standard of studio cleanliness.
- Grounds Maintenance: Maintain the cleanliness of studio grounds, including planter boxes, sidewalks, and entryways; sweep and pick up trash to ensure a welcoming environment.
- Storage Cleanliness: Maintain storage areas throughout the studio to meet the studio's cleanliness standards.
- Special Events: Clean before and after special events according to the specific needs of each event.
Supplies Management:
- Maintain an inventory of cleaning supplies and ensure adequate stock, reporting any needs to the Studio Manager in a timely manner.
- Request timely inventory orders from the administration and replenish supplies to support cleaning schedules.
Emergency Response:
- Be available for urgent cleaning or maintenance issues outside regular hours.
The Facilities Custodian is to complete the tasks according to the Custodian Checklist
Qualifications
- Strong two-way communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with staff and administration.
- Self-directed problem solver with the ability to follow established protocols.
- Ability to contribute creative ideas to enhance cleanliness and studio maintenance systems.
- Proven experience in facilities maintenance and cleaning, ideally within an artistic or creative environment.
- Knowledge of effective cleaning techniques, safety standards, and best practices.
- Self-starter with strong attention to detail and a sense of ownership over the cleanliness and organization of the studio.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks efficiently.
- Able to identify areas for improvement and communicate needs or recommendations clearly to the administration.
- Flexibility to work outside regular hours for special events or urgent maintenance needs.
Benefits & Compensation:
- Hourly compensation: $20-22/hr, depending on experience.
- Schedule: Mondays: 11:00 - 5:00 PM, Wednesdays - Thursdays: 8:30 AM - 11:30 AM, Sundays: 8:30 AM - 11:30 AM
- Start Date: immediate
- Location: 2295 National Ave, San Diego, CA.
- Reports to: Studio Manager
- Flexibility: Availability to support special events is required. Early mornings, nights, and weekend availability may be required on occasion. Occasionally, we may need to adjust the hours on Mondays to accommodate special events.
