SUBJECT: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
REPORTS TO: Building Nurse, Lead Special Education Teacher, Coordinator of Special Education
The position is responsible for working with students under the supervision and guidance of a registered nurse (RN) and special education teacher. The licensed practical nurse (LPN) works cooperatively within the school environment and is responsible for providing individual health care needs as well as support for group and/or cooperative lessons following the IEP/Health Care Plans to assist students in accessing educational programs.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Responsible for assisting the nurse/teacher in the provision of therapeutic and educational interventions for students as documented in IEPs/Health Care Plans. Interventions may include but are not limited to: providing First Aid as needed, administering medication as ordered, performing medical treatments as ordered, and documenting health records as needed. Lifting, positioning, changing/toileting when necessary, as well as assisting and supporting during activity execution.
2. Collaborate with School Nurse regarding medical needs, care plans, medication plans and
communication with parents and medical specialists. Provide other nursing care as determined by School Nurse.
3. Attend field trips and provide nursing care as needed.
4. Work cooperatively with regular and special education staff to accommodate the needs of the students within the academic and school-wide environment.
5. Work cooperatively with the supervising nurse/teacher. Provide information relevant to the student’s recommended program in writing or verbally as pre-arranged between supervisor
and assistant. Meet regularly for supervision and case review. Take the initiative to seek out registered staff when encountering difficulties with procedures or assigned services.
6. Document student progress daily and quarterly towards IEP/Health Care Plan goals and review with supervising nurse/teacher.
7. Attend staff meetings and team meetings, as needed.
8. Participate in continuing education opportunities offered within the district and in other settings, as needed to maintain current licensure and remain knowledgeable of current trends in school settings.
9. Performance of other job-related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Current license as a LPN issued by the Massachusetts Board of Allied Health Professionals.
2. Current Massachusetts First Aid and CPR certification
3. Physically able to lift and transition students.
COMPENSATION: $34.41 - $36.00
