The Registered Respiratory Therapist performs Cardiopulmonary duties in accordance with hospital policy/procedure under general supervision. This can include administering of respiratory treatments, airway management, ventilator management, blood gases, and other noninvasive cardiology procedures. This individual will be held to a high level of customer service representation and will be an active participant in the continuous quality improvement process. Serves as a resource to other employees.

  • Must become certified in PALs and ACLS within 8 months of employment.

  • One year experience working in post-surgical cardiothoracic care required.

Functions

Area of Responsibilities

  • Administers respiratory treatments and oxygen therapy correctly and in a timely manner. Participates in airway management during CODEs. Performs ventilator care according to established policy and protocols. Must be able to set priorities to complete daily assignments.

  • Provides exceptional customer service to patients, families, visitor, physicians, and other employees. Through the established systems and protocols used to evaluate staff for excellent customer service employee will achieve the set goals.

  • Demonstrates the ability to coordinate cardiopulmonary care of the patient with other departments which fosters multidisciplinary care planning.

  • Participates in Performance improvement activities by helping to identify, monitor, and achieve improvement goals established by the department

  • Working knowledgeable of departmental policies and procedures and standards of care practice. Documentation is in compliance with hospital policy and regulatory agencies.

  • Effectively operates and understands the use of specialized equipment.

  • Acts as preceptor/mentor for students and new employees.

  • Participates in multi disciplinary patient care conferences.

  • Accurately evaluates self and meets pre-established professional goals.

  • Accountable for use and ordering of supplies and maintaining inventory

  • Demonstrates behaviors necessary for age-specific care and knowledge of decision making process for all ages of the population(s) served. Demonstrates ability to communicate appropriately with various ages. Demonstrates ability to adapt technique/treatment to age of patient served. As appropriate involves family/significant other in treatment process.

  • Complies with standards set forth by the Joint commission and other regulatory agencies.

  • Knowledgeable of and follows OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens Regulations.

  • Demonstrates awareness of policies and procedures regarding restraints and administers procedures appropriately to restrained patients.

  • Participates in continuing education as mandated per policy.

  • Requires working a minimum of every third weekend, on call 3 shifts per 6 week schedule, working rotating holidays.

  • After 6 months may be required to serve as the shift Charge Therapist.

  • Participates in specialty training or education regarding the open heart program at Tanner Medical Center

  • Able to work independently, following established polices and protocols to wean open heart patients in the ordered time frame.

  • Assures follow up, reporting, and documentation on critical lab results as defined by established policies and protocols.

  • May be required to work areas in addition to the Open Heart Unit depending on census to include but not limited to ER, Adult or Pediatric Floor Care, Adult ICU

Compliance Statement

Employee performs within the prescribed limits of Tanner Health System's Ethics and Compliance program. Is responsible to detect, observe, and report compliance variances to their immediate supervisor, the Compliance Officer, or the Hotline.

Supervisory Responsibility: Has limited supervision over a small section of employees (up to 15), i.e. assigns and directs their work; instructs new employees and corrects results, may discuss with supervisor, but has no authority over job content or personnel. Team governance where the Members evaluate, interview, and recommend personnel actions.
