CLASS TITLE: Weed Abatement Worker 

(TEMPORARY/EMERGENCY)

Department: Facilities Management

Reports To: Project Manager

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Salary: $16.32 per hour (Non-Negotiable)


SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Project Manager (“Manager”) this position will primarily serve as a laborer responsible for clearing weeds, brush, and combustible debris from property to limit fire hazards around homes and buildings. Provide dust suppression by operating a water buffalo. 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Including but not limited to the following duties and responsibilities.


  • Works closely with Project Manager and follows instructions as directed
  • Performs manual labor to cut and remove flammable grasses, weeds, bush, and debris
  • Lifts heavy loads of brush cuttings and debris into a container
  • Uses hand tools (i.e., hoe, rake, shovels) and portable power equipment 
  • Performs routine maintenance of portable power equipment, including cleaning and ensuring proper functioning
  • Cleans facilities or sites after performing work assignments
  • Transport, fill, and operate water buffalo for dust suppression


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Non-supervisory


OTHER DUTIES:

 

  • Clean Tractor
  • Clean skid steer with air compressor
  • Clean Brush cutter with air compressor
  • Drives a vehicle with trailer attached to work truck
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

 

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required. 


KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Machinery and equipment including Brush Cutter, Chain Saw, and Water Buffalo
  • Outdoor work experience in the eradication and control of weeds, brush, and other vegetation
  • Repair and maintenance of handheld power equipment
  • Safety precautions on utilizing heavy equipment and power tools

 

ABILITY TO: 

  • Apply cultural sensitivity to cultural relevant programming, primarily Native American
  • Maintain activity log and use electronic time keeping equipment
  • Operate and maintain tools and equipment
  • Drive a truck with a trailer 
  • Develop a routine of storing equipment in an easy to reach area
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Observe and follow health and safety regulations
  • Work with minimal supervision on assigned duties 


Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate GED/HiSET required and two (2) years of related experience that demonstrates the knowledge and abilities listed above or;
  • An applicant that has completed an 8th grade education will need to have 4 (four) years of full-time work experience to substitute for the required high school diploma/GED and two (2) years of related experience that demonstrates the knowledge and abilities listed above


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS: To perform and to continue to be qualified for this position, the requirements listed below must be met at a time of hire or may be obtained within a specific amount of time depending on the position requirements. Costs for required certifications, licenses, and registration are to be covered by employee, unless offered by the Tribe.

  • Prior to hiring and throughout employment must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License and maintain insurability under the Tribe’s vehicle insurance policy
