Job Title: Geographic Information Systems Specialist Trainee
Department: Planning
Reports To: Planning Director
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Salary: $17.84 per hour non-negotiable
SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Planning Director (“Supervisor”) this position will primarily be performing trainee entry level field duties for the planning department by utilizing the Tribe’s GIS software and asset management system, including collecting and integrating field-based data for various Tribal assets.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Including but not limited to the following duties and responsibilities.
- Creates and maintains spatial data in the Tribe’s GIS system
- Communicate with Tribal members and the public for internal and external inquiries (i.e. US Census Bureau, CVAG, Riverside County and other agencies as necessary)
- Utilizes specialized software programs in conjunction with geographic data sets to organize and display information related to land into a format that is useful
- Collects, updates, integrates, and documents geospatial data from the field to existing GIS data sets
- Collaborates and communicates with the Tribe’s Cultural Committee and Planning Commission to address, create or resolve GIS related services and/or issues
- Prepares and maintains comprehensive records, files, maps, and emails
- Conducts technical research as required
- Applies learned GIS techniques for functions of the Planning department and to develop internal and external reports

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Basic principles of mathematics, geography, and cartography
- Drone and GPS units and equipment
- Applicable Tribal, City, State, and local laws, regulations, and policies
ABILITY TO:
- Apply cultural sensitivity to tribal operations
- Learn ArcGIS and other specialized software for mapping
- Demonstrate learning capabilities of analytical skills including critical thinking, analyzing data, and research skills
- Read and understand technical reports, maps, drawings and specifications with supervisor guidance and instructions
- Calculate mathematics and sort, file, maintain accurate records, documents and assignments
- Prioritize tasks and Meet deadlines
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with the staff, community groups, and other related agencies
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Apply interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy
- Collaborate and work in teams to maintain effective working relationships with employees, management, Tribal members, utility representatives, contractors, architects, developers, other agencies
- Operate standard office and classroom equipment including a computer and assigned software
- Observe and follow health and safety regulations
- Work with minimal supervision on assigned duties
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or equivalency certificate and must have at least one (1) year of clerical work experience using Microsoft Office software and computer skills.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS: To perform and to continue to be qualified for this position, the requirements listed below must be met at a time of hire or may be obtained within a specific amount of time depending on the position requirements. Costs for required certifications, licenses, and registration are to be covered by employees, unless offered by the Tribe.
- Prior to hiring and throughout employment must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License and maintain insurability under the Tribe’s vehicle insurance policy
- Requires defensive driving training every two (2) years
- Requires the successful completion of a course in Knowledge of ArcGIS Pro, and/or training related to this position
