Position Summary
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) serves as the senior strategic and operational executive for Tandem Behavioral Health, overseeing and aligning operations across Virginia sites: the substance abuse specialty practice (Roanoke) and other de novo (new) practices planned in the future. The CEO ensures operational excellence, efficiency, and compliance while upholding Tandem Behavioral Health’s mission to provide accessible, compassionate, and evidence-based behavioral health care.
This role drives growth, integration, and innovation across service lines, ensuring consistent delivery of compassionate, evidence-based behavioral health care. The CEO directly supervises the Clinic Director of Operations, collaborates with clinical and administrative leaders in other sites, and leads the strategic development of new markets and service expansion (de novo projects).
As a senior leader, the CEO partners closely with the owner to execute the organization’s long-term vision, maintain financial sustainability, and foster a culture rooted in empathy, accountability, compassion, and collaboration.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
Executive Operations Leadership
- Provide overall operational leadership across all sites, ensuring consistency, quality, and efficiency.
- Oversee the Clinic Director of Operations and provide executive-level support, coaching, and accountability.
- Develop and monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) across sites; report results to the owner and/or Board/Leadership.
- Lead operational planning, forecasting, and budgeting processes to ensure fiscal responsibility.
- Serve as a key partner to the owner in business development initiatives, expansion planning, and strategic partnerships.
- Ensure effective resource allocation, staffing models, and operational alignment across both locations.
- Conduct onsite visits to practice sites to oversee operations, meet with staff, and ensure alignment.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with Virginia Medicaid, DBHDS, OSHA, HIPAA, and all state and federal regulations.
- Oversee audits, inspections, and accreditation processes for both practices.
- Maintain enterprise-level risk management systems to identify, mitigate, and resolve compliance or safety issues.
- Provide oversight and guidance on client safety incidents, grievances, and investigations.
Clinical & Program Support
- Provide executive oversight of clinical programming, ensuring services meet quality standards and regulatory requirements.
- Support Clinical Directors and Supervisors in aligning clinical care models across sites. Ensure that staff receive appropriate supervision, training, and professional development.
- Monitor quality improvement initiatives and outcomes related to client care.
Human Resources & Talent Development
- Collaborate with HR leadership on recruiting, retaining, and developing qualified staff across both practices.
- Promote a positive organizational culture centered on empathy, accountability, compassion, and collaboration.
- Support succession planning and leadership development for key roles within the organization.
External Relations & Business Development
- Represent Tandem Behavioral Health at conferences, provider networks, and community engagement events.
- Build and strengthen relationships with referral sources, payers, and community partners.
- Partner with the owner to explore and implement growth opportunities, new programs, and innovative service lines.
Qualifications:
Educational Background
- Master’s degree (preferred) in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration (MBA), Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a related behavioral health discipline.
- Clinical licensure (e.g., LPC, LCSW, LMFT, or RN) can be a plus- but not always required if strong in operations with experience in Behavioral Health.
Experience:
- 5–10 years of leadership experience in healthcare operations, with at least 3–5 years in behavioral health or substance use disorder treatment settings.
- Demonstrated success managing Medicaid/MCO contracts, credentialing, and reimbursement models.
- Experience overseeing compliance with state regulations (DBHDS in Virginia), OSHA, HIPAA, and HR policies.
- Strong background in staff management, including recruitment, retention, training, performance improvement, and corrective action.
- Experience in fiscal management: budgeting, payroll, forecasting, and cost containment.
- Proven track record of scaling clinical operations (adding new programs, telehealth services, or geographic expansion).
