UPD has 244 authorized positions including 93 state certified Police Officers, 122 Security Officers, 15 Communications Officers, 6 administrative support personnel, 3 Evidence Technicians and 5 Records Technicians. The department maintains a fully staffed investigations section, a community services unit, a recruiting unit, a training division unit, a victim advocate, and an Emergency Communications Center. Our department will reach out to you to discuss experience. Position level will be determined after the selection process is complete based on experience and position availability. For each officer level: You must be Certified as a Police Officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). You may be required to work weekends, holidays and hours other than Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm. Must have a State of Texas class 'C' vehicle operator's license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment. All applicants must take an Entrance Exam. Qualifications Required Education and Experience: Police Officer in Training Requires High school diploma or GED. Requires two years of full-time employment experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Basic certification. The pay for this position is $31.75/hour. Police Officer II Requires High school diploma or GED. Requires one year of experience as a licensed Police Officer. Must possess the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Basic certification. The pay for this position is $33.34/hour. Police Officer III Requires High school diploma or GED. Requires three years of experience as a licensed Police Officer. Must possess the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Intermediate certification. The pay for this position is $36.67/hour. Police Officer IV Requires High school diploma or GED. Requires five years of experience as a licensed Police Officer. Must possess the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Advanced certification. The pay for this position is $42.17/hour. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Ability to communicate effectively with all segments of the campus population. Ability to function under adverse and stressful conditions. Strong interpersonal skills. Preferred Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree. Previous experience in a college or university environment and experience dealing with the public. Other Requirements: Meet minimum licensing standard requirements as required by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). May require out of town travel. Successful completion of field training program. Applicant must pass an entrance exam to be considered for employment. Applicant must successfully pass psychological evaluation, physical examination, polygraph, and complete background investigation to include but not limited to driving history, criminal background, and credit history. Responsibilities: Patrol specific area on foot or motorized conveyance, responding promptly to calls for assistance. Monitor, note, report, and investigate suspicious persons and situations, safety hazards, and unusual or illegal activity in patrol area. Record facts to prepare reports that document incidents and activities. Issue citations or warnings to violators of motor vehicle laws. Identify, pursue, and arrest suspects and perpetrators of criminal acts. (May require heavy lifting.) Review facts of incidents to determine if criminal act or statute violations were involved. Investigate traffic accidents and other accidents to determine causes and to determine if a crime has been committed. (May require heavy lifting.) Process prisoners and prepare and maintain records of prisoner bookings. (May require heavy lifting.) Testify in court to present evidence or act as a witness in traffic or criminal cases. Inform citizens of community services and recommend options to facilitate long-term problem resolution. Performs other duties as assigned.
