What are the responsibilities and job description for the Youth Basketball Instructor - East Pasco Family YMCA position at Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA?
Under the direction of the Program Director, the Sports Instructor provides leadership to sports participants and parents in achieving a quality sports program for ages 3 through adults. Exhibits behaviors and attitudes that are consistent with the YMCA Mission and policies of the association. The Sports Instructor holds and designs group skill training and instruction for sports clinics.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Works and communicates effectively with the kids, parents, coaches, and staff.
- Facilitates and plans sports clinics.
- Ensures the highest quality of service and level of professionalism by establishing and maintaining a team attitude, order, discipline and encourages good sportsmanship.
- Effectively sets up fields/courts and has proper equipment available.
- Routinely inspects equipment to ensure it is in good working condition before and after use.
- Returns equipment upon completion of class and reports repairs/maintenance needed and cleans area as needed.
- Ensures safety protocols at all times, reporting accidents or incidents immediately.
- Establishes and maintains a professional and positive image and rapport with members and students.
- Performs additional functions or assumes additional responsibilities as needed or as requested by the Program Director or supervisor.
- Engages in positive public relations with participants, members and guests ensuring a positive experience.
- Adheres to the Association operating policies and procedures by operating the programs within the guidelines set forth.
- Follows YMCA policies and procedures regarding the safety, health and welfare of members, program participants, guests and staff; responds to emergency situations in accordance to facility policies and certification requirements.
- Attends and actively participates in all trainings, staff meetings/in-services as assigned.
Safety and Risk Management
- Adheres to all Federal, State, and local safety regulations.
- Adheres to all YMCA policies and procedures regarding the safety, health and welfare of members, program participants, guests, and staff members.
- Ensures that all Tampa Y standards, best practices, and policies are implemented and consistently followed, including those related to emergency procedures, child abuse prevention, and appropriate supervision.
- Ensures implementation of and follows all training requirements in addition to ensuring proper reporting of all incidents/accidents according to risk management procedures.
- Maintains a safe and healthy environment at all times, including performing daily safety checks of program areas, equipment, and supplies.
- Maintains proper records, including certifications, meetings and trainings.
- Maintains an emphasis on safety in all areas of responsibility as they relate to members and staff.
Education/Experience Required:
- Must be at least 18 years of age or older.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience coaching and/or training in sports.
- Must have working knowledge of games rules and use of equipment for a specific sport.
- Demonstrates objectivity in emotional situations; maintains patience, confidence and composure under pressure or adverse circumstances.
- Demonstrates effective oral communication; conveys information in a clear, yet concise manner; actively listens to others.
- Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with groups and/or individuals from different backgrounds.
- Represents the YMCA in a positive manner.
Certifications/Trainings Required:
- Must obtain within 30 days of employment and then maintain current certifications in community CPR/AED and First Aid.
- Maintains position-specific required certifications as stated in the training matrix.

- The employee needs sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions and to supervise program activities in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor locations.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer for extended periods of time and be able to communicate using a computer and authorized work phone/smart device.
- Ability to instruct and observe participants during program activities.
- The employee frequently is required to see, observe, and hear all participants, and make sound judgments and decisions.
- Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position, including, but not limited to, leading class, walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting.
- Ability to sit and reach, and must be able to move around the work environment.
- Hear noises and distress signals in the program environment, including in the classroom and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
- Must have flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
- Ability to lift and move a minimum of 30 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Ability to work in a variety of environments, specifically those subject to extreme humidity/dampness, heat and cold.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.
- This position requires reliable transportation and willing to travel, if needed.
- This position may require availability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Must be able to perform all duties and functions of those that are supervised
