Position Overview

Tampa Electric Company is seeking a motivated accounting professional to join our Regulatory Accounting team. This position is part of Tampa Electric's Accounting Progression and may be filled at multiple levels based on the selected candidate’s experience, technical knowledge, and demonstrated capability.

We are open to candidates ranging from early‑career accountants who are eager to learn regulatory accounting, to experienced financial accounting analysts who bring strong GAAP expertise and can assume greater responsibility quickly.

Level and compensation placement will be determined based on qualifications and alignment with company's leveling criteria.

Position Scope (Progressive by Level)

Depending on level, this role will support or independently perform regulatory accounting and reporting activities, including:

  • Preparing journal entries in accordance with U.S. GAAP
  • Reconciling and maintaining general ledger accounts
  • Preparing regulatory reports and filings for agencies such as FERC, EIA, and the Florida Public Service Commission (FPSC)
  • Supporting or coordinating month‑end close activities
  • Performing account analysis and researching variances
  • Contributing to budgets and forecasts
  • Supporting audits, rate cases, and regulatory data requests
  • Creating ad hoc reports and participating in special projects

As experience increases, responsibilities expand to include peer review, increased judgment, and greater ownership of complex accounting and regulatory activities.

Leveling & Career Progression

Accountant I (Entry / Early Career)

  • Focus on learning regulatory accounting fundamentals
  • Prepares journal entries, reconciliations, and reports with guidance
  • Builds GAAP proficiency and system knowledge

Accounting Analyst (Level II)

  • Performs work of increasing complexity with limited supervision
  • Prepares and peer reviews journal entries, reconciliations, and regulatory reports
  • Coordinates components of month‑end close
  • Applies judgment and identifies potential process improvements

Senior Accounting Analyst

  • Independently handles complex accounting and regulatory activities
  • Reviews work performed by others and provides guidance
  • Manages higher‑risk or high‑visibility accounts and filings
  • Serves as a technical resource within the team

Advancement and level placement are based on demonstrated performance, technical capability, and business needs — not tenure.

Qualifications

Education

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from a regionally accredited institution
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • CPA preferred, but not required

Experience (varies by level)

  • Accountant I: Entry‑level; limited or no professional accounting experience required
  • Accounting Analyst: Typically 2–5 years of progressive accounting experience
  • Senior Accounting Analyst: Typically 5 years of progressive accounting experience
  • Preferred: Experience in a regulated utility, energy, or similarly complex regulatory environment

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of U.S. GAAP (depth aligned to level)
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel; advanced capability required at higher levels
  • Experience with systems such as SAP, BPC, Power Plant, Allegro, or similar platforms is a plus
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills
  • Ability to work in a deadline‑driven environment
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills
  • Attention to detail, sound judgment, and accountability
  • Willingness and ability to learn regulatory accounting requirements

Working Conditions

  • Standard business hours with additional time required during close cycles, audits, or regulatory activities
  • Compliance with company safety policies and procedures required

Physical Requirements

  • Normal physical demands associated with an office work environment
