Adult Service Case Aides provide general household support activities designed to increase the likelihood that Adult Protective Service clients are able to remain in the home in a safe sanitary environment.

Case Aide services are provided to reduce the risk of neglect, abuse, and exploitation to vulnerable adults and to prevent inappropriate institutionalization by maintaining the client in the least restrictive environment.

The position is based at the DHR office in Robertsdale, but services are provided throughout Baldwin County.

Tasks listed below may be performed in the home of the client, but may also include transporting the client to other locations: (this list is NOT all-inclusive)

  • In-home assistance with light chores and housekeeping (i.e., routine cleaning, sweeping, mopping, dusting, changing bed linens, defrosting and cleaning refrigerator, cleaning stove, light laundry, ironing, and mending.)
  • Transportation to medical appointments, entitlement eligibility appointments, the pharmacy, the laundry, and to pay bills.
  • Assistance with grocery shopping and selecting and preparing food (i.e., meal planning and helping client understand and follow prescribed diet.)
  • Basic assistance with completing applications for entitlements such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medicare, and Medicaid.
  • Provide reminders to take medications as prescribed, but NOT administer medications. (The Case Aide may NOT administer medications, only remind the client to take medications.)
  • Read to and provide assistance with writing letters (i.e., DHR, APS, SS, utilities.)
  • Teach practical methods of managing household tasks and budgeting finances.
  • Coordinate purchase and delivery of PPE (i.e., masks, rubber gloves, hand sanitizer) to adults being served through APS as requested.

  • Accrued personal leave
  • No accrued sick leave
  • Observance with pay of 13 State of Alabama holidays
  • Benefits available after 90-day probationary period at own expense
  • Travel reimbursement does not include to and from work
  • Hours of work not to exceed 40 per week
  • No overtime allowed
  • Work week begins on Saturday at 12:01 AM and ends on Friday at midnight
  • Flexible scheduling assigned by DHR to meet case needs may include evenings and weekends and must be flexed within the same week; otherwise, normal operating hours of DHR are observed

Staff Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent with several years of experience involving considerable interaction with the public (particularly the elderly and/or disabled.)
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Good attendance and punctuality.
  • Read and write legibly.
  • Computer skills.
  • Working knowledge of the basic tasks of housekeeping and household management.
  • Be fully ambulatory and physically able to work with the elderly and disabled.
  • Able to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions to provide services based on service plan.
  • Provide evidence of tuberculosis test in accordance with Department of Public Health and Safety, and provide medical documentation as needed.
  • Demonstrate emotional and mental maturity.
  • Valid Alabama driver's license and good driving record (MVR) evidenced by Alabama Law Enforcement Agency before hire and as requested.
  • Proof of automobile liability insurance with limits $100,000/$300,000/$50,000 or higher and listed as a driver on the policy for vehicles(s) that will be used for the job.
  • Able to maintain statistical records and write narrative accounts of services provided.
  • Work independently on an establish d schedule.
  • May not be related to the family (child, parent, or sibling) for whom services are being provided.
  • Must have ABI, FBI, and Child and Adult Abuse and Neglect Central Registry Clearance.
  • Willing to report abuse and neglect and willing to participate in any investigation of compliance, including allegations of abuse, neglect, or exploitations.
  • Able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with such entities as education, medical professionals, social work staff, etc.
  • Maintain professional relationship with client and family by providing services without becoming personally involved.
  • Demonstrate ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with vulnerable adults, family members, social workers, office personnel, and community resources.
  • Practice universal infection control and appropriate safety standards, such as seat belt use for self and all passengers.
  • Abide by HIPAA Privacy and confidentiality Policy.
  • Agree to abide by Department office rules and procedures.
  • Complete 90-day probationary period.
