About the Role
The company is hiring a Senior Counsel, Energy Trading to lead and support a wide range of commodity, trading, and structured commercial matters. This attorney will work closely with senior legal and commercial leadership and will have significant responsibility and visibility across the business.
The position is based in New York City, and candidates must either reside in or be willing to relocate to the NYC metro area.
Key Responsibilities
Commercial & Trading Transactions
- Draft and negotiate agreements for financially and physically settled commodity transactions.
- Lead negotiation of structured hedging, commodity-linked financings, and associated credit support.
- Advise on the interplay between trading documentation and secured credit arrangements.
- Provide commercial teams with practical, business-focused legal and reputational risk assessments.
Representative Workstreams
- ISDA negotiation and confirmations across power, gas, and environmental products.
- Structured products such as swaps, options, and revenue-protection instruments.
- Physical commodity purchase and sale agreements for natural gas and power.
- Environmental products, storage, logistics, and asset management agreements.
Regulatory Touchpoints
- Provide limited support on regulatory matters affecting U.S. energy markets.
- Ensure alignment between legal guidance, commercial strategy, and risk frameworks.
Qualifications
- JD with 5 years of experience managing complex commercial or commodity transactions in a law firm or in-house setting.
- Strong background in energy, commodities, derivatives, or structured/project finance preferred.
- Proven ability to manage multiple matters simultaneously in a fast-moving commercial environment.
- Exceptional drafting, negotiation, communication, and project management skills.
- Collaborative, adaptable, and able to partner closely with cross-functional teams.
