Job Title: Tax Manager
Location: Herndon, VA (Hybrid)
Overview:
Seeking an experienced Tax Manager to support a multi-entity, multi-jurisdiction environment from a hybrid role based in Herndon, VA.
Key Responsibilities
Sales and Use Tax
- Lead and oversee preparation, review, and filing of monthly, quarterly, and annual sales and use tax returns across multiple states and jurisdictions.
- Analyze large datasets to identify sales and use tax liabilities, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
- Monitor state and local tax law changes and communicate impacts and recommendations to leadership.
- Conduct complex tax research and develop strategies to minimize sales and use tax risk.
- Support international sales tax and VAT compliance, including research and proper tax treatment of international transactions.
Business Licenses
- Manage compliance with business license requirements across multiple jurisdictions, including preparation and submission of applications and renewals.
- Build and maintain processes for Business, Professional and Occupational License (BPOL) and other business licenses to track deadlines and ensure timely filings.
- Assess when business licenses are required, provide guidance to management and operations, and help avoid unnecessary registrations.
- Research international tax matters such as permanent establishment (PE), VAT, and corporate tax obligations in foreign jurisdictions.
Property Taxes
- Oversee the property tax compliance process, including calculation, preparation, and filing of returns across multiple jurisdictions.
- Review property tax assessments and coordinate with local authorities to address valuation issues.
- Ensure timely payment of all property tax obligations.
Income Tax Support
- Gather, analyze, and provide accurate financial data to support the preparation and filing of federal, state, and local income tax returns by the corporate tax team.
- Compile and validate information for franchise tax filings and state apportionment calculations.
- Coordinate with the income tax function to ensure timely delivery of trial balances, adjustments, and supporting schedules.
- Maintain detailed documentation of tax data in line with internal controls and audit requirements.
- Respond to information requests from income tax and audit teams.
- Track changes in tax laws and regulations that affect data reporting or apportionment methodologies.
- Support improvements to tax data collection and reporting processes.
Data Analysis and Process Improvement
- Work with large volumes of tax related data for sales tax, BPOL, property taxes, and apportionments using tools such as Excel and business intelligence platforms.
- Perform data reconciliation and detailed data mining to identify discrepancies and ensure compliance.
- Identify and drive process improvement initiatives, including automation opportunities to streamline compliance and reporting.
Audit and Internal Support
- Lead responses to tax audits, coordinating timely and accurate submission of documentation.
- Serve as a key point of contact for internal stakeholders on tax implications of business operations and transactions.
- Support tax leadership on special projects, system implementations, and tax process improvement initiatives.
Compliance and Reporting
- Help ensure overall compliance with state, local, and international tax requirements.
- Oversee preparation and review of monthly tax provisions and reconciliations to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
- Provide regular reports and updates to management on compliance status, risks, and potential opportunities.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA or equivalent certification strongly preferred.
- 5 to 7 years of progressive tax experience, including supervisory or management responsibilities.
- Strong expertise in sales and use tax, business licenses, and property tax. International tax exposure preferred.
- Experience with income tax compliance and provisions is a plus.
- Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookups, and handling large datasets. Experience with tax or ERP tools such as Avalara, Costpoint, or similar systems is beneficial.
- Demonstrated leadership, analytical, and problem solving skills with the ability to address complex tax issues.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments and interface with external authorities.
- Must reside within a commutable distance of Herndon, VA for a hybrid work schedule.
Salary : $100,000 - $120,000
