What are the responsibilities and job description for the Investment Banking Associate position at Talently?
Investment Banking Associate | Denver, Colorado
The Firm
Our client is a Denver-based middle market investment bank focused exclusively on the engineering and construction industry — one of the most active and fragmented M&A sectors in the lower middle market. The firm advises privately held and PE-backed companies across construction services, building materials, and engineering and environmental services on sell-side and buy-side M&A transactions, ESOP transactions, and strategic advisory mandates. With deep sector expertise, long-standing industry relationships, and a transaction-focused culture, this is a firm where talented bankers build genuine specialization rather than rotating through industries without going deep.
The Opportunity
This is a high-ownership Associate seat with full deal lifecycle exposure from day one — not a back-office support role. You will work directly alongside senior bankers on live transactions, developing deep expertise in E&C M&A and ESOP advisory while building the relationships and skillset that define a long-term advisory career in a specialized, high-demand sector.
What You'll Do
- Build and maintain detailed financial models including DCF, comparable company, precedent transaction, and LBO analyses tailored to E&C business dynamics
- Prepare pitch books, confidential information memorandums, management presentations, and other client-facing marketing materials
- Conduct thorough industry and company research across E&C sub-sectors to support valuation and transaction strategy
- Support all phases of deal execution — process management, buyer outreach, due diligence coordination, and delivery of client deliverables
- Collaborate directly with senior bankers to identify and evaluate new business development opportunities in the engineering and construction market
- Develop working knowledge of ESOP transaction structuring, a growing and differentiated capability in the E&C succession planning market
Who You Are
- 2 years of experience as an Investment Banking Analyst or Associate with live transaction exposure
- Strong academic record (minimum GPA of 3.5)
- Advanced financial modeling and analytical skills across core valuation methodologies
- High proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
- Strong quantitative, problem-solving, and time-management abilities
- Excellent communicator — able to work effectively with senior bankers, management teams, and counterparties in a fast-paced deal environment
- Based in or willing to relocate to Denver (on-site role)
Preferred Background
- Prior exposure to ESOP advisory or transaction structuring
- Knowledge of the engineering and construction sector — contractors, specialty services, building materials, or engineering and environmental services
- Familiarity with LBO modeling and leveraged finance concepts
- Experience with Capital IQ, PitchBook, or comparable financial data platforms
- Interest in pursuing the CFA or other professional certifications
Salary : $200,000 - $250,000
