Director/VP of Business Development

Behavioral Health | Field-Based (Philadelphia Metro)

Company Overview

Our client is a pioneer in outpatient behavioral health, having introduced one of the very first intensive outpatient models in the country over five decades ago and treated more than 50,000 patients since. Built on a mission to make high-quality substance use and mental health treatment accessible without requiring patients to put their lives on hold, the organization has become known for a clinically integrated, low-barrier approach that removes the obstacles patients typically face elsewhere. Its culture is disciplined, data-driven, and performance-oriented, with leadership committed to rewarding results and investing in the people who deliver them. Now backed by a growth-focused ownership group and expanding its footprint beyond its home region, the organization is seeking a Regional Director of Business Development to build and lead the sales engine that will carry this next chapter of growth.

Position Overview

This is a rare ground-floor opportunity to build a business development function from the ground up at a company entering an aggressive multi-market growth phase. As a true player-coach, this leader will personally manage a portfolio of strategic referral relationships while leading and developing a team of business development representatives across a Mid-Atlantic territory, with plans to expand into new regions on the horizon. The role carries significant visibility, reporting into senior leadership and engaging directly with the executive team on strategy, performance, and market expansion. Three things make this opportunity especially compelling for the right person: first, the chance to design the KPIs, playbook, and team structure for a function that does not yet exist at scale, essentially building something that they own; second, a direct and highly visible path to broader regional or VP-level scope as new markets open and the company grows; and third, a culture that genuinely rewards performance, paired with a healthier field-based schedule than what is typical in residential or inpatient sales roles.

Position Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Performance Management

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of business development representatives, setting territory strategy and referral-growth targets while modeling the selling behaviors expected of the team.
  • Define the key performance indicators used to measure team and individual success, and manage the team against those metrics through regular coaching, ride-alongs, and accountability conversations.
  • Build and execute a market-entry playbook for opening new territories and communities where the organization has limited or no existing presence.

Business Development & Account Management

  • Personally own and grow a portfolio of strategic referral relationships within the assigned territory, serving as the primary point of contact for key partners.
  • Build and expand relationships with physicians, therapists, hospitals, and other referral sources to generate and grow patient referrals, with a particular focus on deepening the middle of the referral funnel.
  • Maintain a consistent, disciplined cadence of field activity, including outreach calls, in-person visits, and presentations with prospective and existing referral sources.
  • Build and manage a healthy referral pipeline in the CRM, tracking accounts and activity and ensuring the same discipline across the team.

Cross-Functional Coordination & Reporting

  • Partner closely with operations and clinical leadership on new market and location launches, aligning business development timelines with program readiness.
  • Collaborate with marketing on collateral, market-specific messaging, and feedback from the field to support new and existing markets.
  • Report on territory performance, referral trends, and pipeline health to senior leadership, informing forecasting and resource decisions.

Required

Position Qualifications

  • A demonstrated track record of building and leading high-performing sales or business development teams, with clear, disciplined KPIs and a repeatable coaching cadence.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive sales or business development leadership experience, including at least 5 years currently or recently managing a team, or a combination of education and experience providing equivalent knowledge.
  • Current, hands-on selling experience in addition to team leadership; this is a true player-coach role and requires someone still active in the field.
  • Experience in a for-profit, growth-oriented organization; candidates coming exclusively from nonprofit or academic settings will not be a fit for this role.
  • Comfort working with data to identify trends and inform strategy, rather than relying solely on relationship instinct.
  • Based in or willing to relocate to the greater Philadelphia area, with the flexibility to travel extensively (roughly four days per week) throughout the territory.

Preferred

  • Experience in behavioral health, substance use treatment, or another emotionally sensitive healthcare service.
  • An existing referral network among physicians, therapists, or other medical professionals in the Mid-Atlantic region.
  • Experience with Salesforce or a comparable CRM.
  • Bachelor's degree, though equivalent professional experience will be given full consideration.
