Phlebotomist

Job Summary:
Performs phlebotomy, specimen collection, accessioning, processing, and distribution. Ensures accurate specimen identification, proper handling, and timely delivery for laboratory testing while maintaining patient safety and quality standards.

Essential Duties:

• Performs venipunctures and finger sticks to collect blood specimens.

• Verifies patient identification, specimen type, volume, and labeling.

• Processes and prepares specimens for laboratory and reference testing.

• Explains procedures to patients and obtains required information.

• Communicates with physicians, departments, and laboratory staff to ensure efficient workflow.

• Performs difficult recollections and follows established specimen collection procedures.

• Maintains equipment and supplies; monitors inventory and expiration dates.

• Performs quality control and proficiency testing as required.

• Participates in quality assurance and performance improvement activities.

• Follows safety, infection control, regulatory, and departmental standards.

Requirements:

• High School Diploma/GED or equivalent – Required in CA, preferred in Oregon and Hawaii

• Associate’s/Technical Degree – Preferred.

• CPT I/CPT II or MLT License – Required in CA, preferred in Oregon and Hawaii

• Previous phlebotomy and specimen collection experience preferred.
