Our client, a construction firm serving the tri-state / Southern Westchester, NY area is looking for an experienced Accounting Manager to oversee day-to-day accounting operations, support project/job-cost financial management, and ensure timely, accurate financial reporting.
The Accounting Manager is responsible for managing the accounting function for a construction business, including oversight of accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll coordination, job costing support, general ledger accuracy, reconciliations, and month-end close. This role partners with operations/project teams and works with external providers (CPA, payroll, tax, insurance/audit) to maintain strong internal controls and reliable financial information.
Key responsibilities
• Oversee daily accounting operations including A/P, A/R, payroll coordination, cash management, and general ledger activity
• Manage the monthly close process, including bank/credit card reconciliations, accruals, account reconciliations, and preparation of month-end reporting packages
• Maintain accurate job costing processes and reporting; partner with project teams to track labor, materials, subcontractor costs, and job profitability
• Review and approve vendor and subcontractor invoices; ensure proper coding, cost allocation, and documentation tracking
• Oversee customer/owner billing processes, including invoice preparation support, payment application, and collections follow-up
• Coordinate weekly payroll processes and ensure appropriate support for payroll reporting and compliance (as applicable)
• Support sales tax compliance (as applicable), including coordination and preparation support for filings and related documentation
• Coordinate year-end activities including 1099 preparation support, audit/tax support, and responding to CPA requests
• Maintain and improve accounting procedures, internal controls, and recordkeeping practices; ensure files are organized and audit-ready
• Support budgeting and forecasting activities as needed; provide variance explanations and operational insights to leadership
Qualifications
Required
• 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including construction or job-cost accounting exposure
• Prior experience supervising or leading accounting processes (even if you have not managed a large team)
• Strong knowledge of A/P, A/R, payroll coordination, reconciliations, and general ledger fundamentals
• Experience with Sage construction software (and/or Sage and QuickBooks) and strong Excel skills
• Ability to manage deadlines, work independently, and communicate clearly with internal teams and external partners
• High attention to detail with the judgment to prioritize and escalate issues appropriately
Preferred
• Construction accounting experience (GC or subcontractor), including job-cost reporting and WIP familiarity
• Experience working with outside CPA firms on month-end, tax support, and year-end close
• Payroll certification or hands-on construction payroll experience
• Associate or Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field
Work environment
• Full-time, in-office role (unless otherwise specified by the employer)
• Fast-paced construction environment requiring coordination with project/field teams and outside partners
The compensation for this position ranges from $100,000.00 - $120,000.00. Actual compensation will be dependent upon the specific role, office location as well as the individual’s qualifications, experience, skills and certifications.
