Shift/Time Zone: Monday-Friday 1:30am to 9:30am (Night)
This is a night shift position. Start times currently will be 130am to 930am. Start times may vary slightly depending on specimen volume drop times in the department
Job Summary
The Specimen Processing Technician I (SPT I) provides general operational support within the Specimen Processing Department. This role is critical to ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant handling of laboratory specimens. The position requires strong data entry skills, attention to detail, flexibility, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-production laboratory environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform general specimen processing functions, including but not limited to:
- A-Station processing
- Pre-sorting specimens
- Pickup and delivery of processed specimens to laboratory areas
- Imaging and microfilming
- Centrifugation and aliquoting of specimens
- Accurately identify specimen types and match them to test orders.
- Enter specimen and test data with speed and accuracy (minimum 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour).
- Learn, understand, and comply with regulatory and compliance requirements related to test ordering, which may change frequently.
- Maintain productivity and quality standards in a heavy-volume production environment.
- Ensure all work is completed accurately and within departmental turnaround times.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and other departments.
- Adhere strictly to safety, compliance, and biohazard protocols, including the use of required PPE (lab coat, mask, goggles, gloves, and protective wear).
- Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to changing workloads and customer demands.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Fast-paced, high-volume production laboratory environment.
- Exposure to biohazard materials; strict safety practices required.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
- Repetitive tasks performed throughout the shift.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Excellent understanding of the English language, both written and spoken.
- Strong data entry and basic computer skills.
- Ability to work scheduled shifts reliably, arrive on time, and remain for the full shift.
- Reliable transportation to and from the worksite (public transit, Uber, or rideshare is not considered reliable transportation).
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous laboratory or specimen processing experience.
- Medical background with knowledge of medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory.
- Prior hospital laboratory experience.
- Experience working in a production-based environment.
Additional Requirements
- Availability of working nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call shifts as needed.
- Dependability is critical—excessive absenteeism or tardiness will result in termination.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a professional attitude that promote a positive work environment.
