Job Title- Clinical - Hospital Specimen Technician
Location- Fort Wayne, IN
Duration- 4 Months

Job Summary
The Hospital Specimen Technician is responsible for the accurate preparation, processing, and handling of patient specimens within a hospital setting.
This role ensures all pre-analytical procedures are completed efficiently and in compliance with established protocols, supporting testing performed by Client.
The technician also acts as a liaison between hospital staff and the laboratory, ensuring seamless communication and excellent customer service.
Key Responsibilities
- Specimen Processing & Test Send-Out
- Perform specimen preparation and processing following established pre-analytical procedures.
- Demonstrate proficiency in test ordering policies, specimen requirements, and sample preparation.
- Utilize hospital Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Quest systems effectively.
- Print and manage Quest laboratory testing reports.
- Monitor and interpret specimen tracking and workflow data.
- Perform remote accessioning (pre-accessioning) as required.
- Manage inventory and order laboratory supplies.
- Problem Resolution
- Troubleshoot specimen-related issues including missing information, unsuitable samples (TNP), test inquiries (TIQ), and additional sample requests.
- Resolve client and specimen-related concerns promptly and accurately.
- Customer Service
- Serve as a liaison between hospital staff and Quest Diagnostics laboratory teams.
- Handle inbound calls and provide proactive support with professionalism.
- Communicate effectively regarding specimen issues, test cancellations, and billing inquiries.
- Collaborate with hospital staff, laboratory personnel, and internal teams to ensure smooth operations.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- 1-3 years of relevant work experience in a clinical or laboratory setting.
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
- Prior experience in a hospital laboratory environment is highly preferred.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong data entry skills (minimum 6,000 keystrokes/hour).
- Familiarity with Hospital LIS systems (preferred).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced, production environment.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to remain composed under pressure and adapt to changing priorities.
- Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to work in a biohazard environment while following safety protocols.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in specimen handling.
Additional Responsibilities
- Perform pain management urine specimen collection.
- Travel to multiple outreach locations as required.
