By moving news consumption and discussions away from devices and distractions and into public spaces, Wallace House aims to foster civic engagement, open conversation and spark debate.

Job Summary

Wallace House Center for Journalists continues to build on its efforts toward expanding its flagship programs, deepening public engagement and extending its reach to broader, more diverse audiences. As home to the Knight-Wallace Fellowships for Journalists, the Livingston Awards for Young Journalists, and the Wallace House Presents event series, Wallace House advances the vital role of journalism in an informed and engaged society.

We are looking for a temporary Marketing and Engagement Associate to provide administrative assistance in planning and executing Wallace House communications, programs and events. Primary duties include assisting with planning, marketing and outreach for our Wallace House Presents events series; audience engagement, social media implementation, and communications for all Wallace House programs; communications and coordination support for event speakers; and hosting support for Wallace House activities.

This temporary staff position is 40 hours per week with benefits, requiring office-based daily work and periodic evening work for public events. The hourly rate is $25 per hour and can be higher for candidates with exceptional experience.

The position reports to the Assistant Director for Marketing, Events and Engagement. This temporary opportunity for someone eager to expand their marketing experience will run from early June 2026 to November 2026.

The temporary Marketing and Engagement Associate will provide collaborative team support for our 'Wallace House Presents' event series and communication and activity coordination for our flagship programs, the Knight-Wallace Fellowships for Journalists and The Livingston Awards for Young Journalists. The position is ideal for someone eager to build communications, marketing and event experience. It involves administrative responsibility and assistance for brand support and event planning and execution, including logistical coordination, guest and speaker planning and communication, database management and post-event follow-up (35%); multi-platform communications, marketing implementation, and management of digital and print inventory (35%); audience engagement and social media outreach (20%); and other related duties as assigned (10%). Specific responsibilities may include:

Working closely with the staff to ensure the timely, effective and accurate development and distribution of print and digital materials related to Wallace House programs and events

Providing marketing and brand assistance for creating and distributing specific assets and materials, including e-newsletters, webpages, invitations, programs, and audience information

Social media engagement tied to Wallace House programs and events, including drafting and maintaining frequent social media postings across platforms, adhering to our communications strategies and objectives

Maintaining website pages, ensuring up-to-date and accurate content

Providing on-site support at event venues, working with venue staff, university service departments and outside vendors to ensure effective execution of events from set up to pack up

Coordinating guest speaker travel, including booking and managing hotel, flight and local transportation

Providing program management assistance for the Livingston Awards, including event planning and processing award entries for the judges' review.

Excellent public-facing communication skills are essential. The position requires regular interaction with a range of audiences, prominent speakers, program donors, Knight-Wallace fellows and alumni. Evening work is periodically required, as events are typically in the late afternoon and early evening. Successful candidates must understand and respect the importance of diversity and inclusion in a professional environment and be committed to audience and engagement strategies that aim to build a broad and diverse community of participants and supporters of Wallace House programs.

Required Qualifications*

  • 1-3 years of experience in events, communications or marketing
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Team play, experienced in collaborating on project work
  • Demonstrated organizational and project management skills
  • Working knowledge of WordPress, Canva, Campaign Monitor or other publishing, design and email applications.
  • Social Media outreach and engagement experience
  • Familiarity with AP style, New York Times style and content formatting. Desired Qualifications*
    • Degree in marketing, communications, journalism, English or related field
    • Familiarity with journalism organizations and the industry
    • Familiarity with University policies and procedures related to event planning
    • Familiarity with FileMaker, SalesForce or similar database programs
    • Avid news consumer across traditional and digital platforms
    • Interested in current events and fostering civil debate and civic engagement
    • Interest in trends and best practices in media distribution and consumption
    • Interested in trends and best practices in brand development
Modes of Work

The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence. Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan.
