Job Summary

This position involves analytical, and statistical activities for research within the Department of Psychiatry. The Statistical Analyst will play a critical role in a multi-method public health research initiative examining the intersection of alcohol use, firearm access, and suicide risk. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing, analyzing, and interpreting data from national surveys and ecological momentary assessments (EMA), as well as integrating information from additional relevant datasets or collaborative projects, as needed. The Statistical Analyst must understand research complexities and possess the flexibility to work across diverse sources of data, applying advanced problem-solving techniques that leverage both existing and emerging scientific knowledge. They will generate actionable insights for risk identification, intervention development, and dissemination of findings relevant to suicide prevention efforts, and may contribute analytical expertise to other departmental studies or interdepartmental research initiatives.

Responsibilities*

Responsibilities

This position involves a wide range of tasks including statistical analysis using both existing and newly collected data from national surveys and EMAs. The Statistical Analyst will also be expected to provide statistical training and guidance to collaborators. The Statistical Analyst will work with a multidisciplinary team of researchers across survey, qualitative, and EMA methods using various platforms and data collection software; occasional travel or remote meeting participation may be required. Specifically, the position includes the following responsibilities:

Statistical Analysis (50%)

  • Develop and draft project specific analysis plans
  • Independently execute advanced statistical analyses, and interpret results to identify key trends, risk factors, and associations within complex datasets, supporting research hypotheses and informing strategic decisions
  • Conduct power analyses, simulation studies, and moderator/mediator analytics to deepen the understanding of risk pathways and variability
  • Address research complexities by developing creative solutions to data challenges and applying up-to-date scientific techniques

Reporting, Visualization, and Dissemination (15%)

  • Prepare comprehensive statistical reports and data visualizations (e.g., charts, tables, dashboards) to communicate findings to team members, stakeholders, and for publication
  • Contribute to the preparation and writing of manuscripts, abstracts, and presentations for academic and lay audiences

Data Management and Preparation (15%)

  • Use statistical software (e.g., SAS, R, SPSS) to create and run scripts that clean, organize, and combine large datasets from different sources, ensuring the data is accurate and ready for analysis
  • Ensure data integrity, thorough documentation, and compliance with privacy regulations and institutional policies
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation of data and analysis files
  • Implement programmatic methods to ensure data quality
  • Help coordinate with software vendors to develop data collection methods for EMA surveys

Collaboration and Meetings (10%)

  • Collaborate with investigators, biostatisticians, qualitative researchers and other members of the research team to triangulate
  • findings and support the aims of the research study
  • Work with collaborators to define scientific questions, formulate models and methods, and advise on the presentation of results
  • Participate and lead discussions on analysis and improvement of data collection, quality of data analyses, programming, and documentation

Instrument and Method Development (10%)

  • Contribute to the creation and continuous improvement of research instruments, including surveys and EMA protocols
  • Assist collaborators with developing research projects and instruments

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Survey Research, Psychology, Public Health, Data Science, or a related field
  • Proficiency with statistical software (e.g., SAS, R, SPSS), including the ability to manage datasets, perform statistical analyses, and interpret results
  • Working knowledge of a range of analytic techniques (e.g., multilevel modeling and regression analyses
  • Ability to analyze, compare, and evaluate various courses of action and make independent decisions on matters within scope of responsibility
  • Demonstrated ability to apply methods for addressing data challenges, including handling missing or incomplete data
  • Ability to perform primary activities and decision-making independently
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to translate complex statistical findings for non-technical stakeholders
  • Demonstrated strong attention to detail in all aspects of work
  • Proven ability to adhere to ethical standards when handling sensitive data

Senior Level: Minimum 3 years professional experience in data analysis

Intermediate Level: Minimum 1 year professional experience in data analysis

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master's degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Survey Research, Psychology, Public Health, Data Science, or a related field
  • Knowledge of public health research, suicide prevention, substance use, or firearms safety topics preferred but not required
  • Working knowledge of data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Python, Excel), with the ability to apply these tools to analyze and present data effectively
  • Familiarity with survey weighting methodology and analysis of nationally representative samples, highly desired
  • Experience applying contemporary computational and statistical methods, such as machine learning
  • Demonstrate familiarity with EMA data and address its unique analytic challenges

Work Schedule

This is a full-time position, requiring 40 hours per week, typically during regular business hours. While the primary schedule will be daytime hours, occasional evening or weekend work may be expected to accommodate project needs, deadlines, or research activities.

Work Locations

This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule in accordance with the University of Michigan?s Flexible Work Policy. The specific hybrid arrangement, including days on campus and remote work, will be determined in collaboration with the hiring manager based on team needs, the nature of the role, and operational requirements. All employees are expected to attend in-person meetings or events as required and comply with unit and university guidelines.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.
