National Grid is hiring a Lead Engineer to join our collaborative MA Gas Engineering team in the Central region, based in Waltham, MA. This is a hybrid position requiring a minimum of two days per week in the office.

Our Team

We develop and manage the design and engineering for pipeline projects within the New England Central distribution territory. Our high-performing team is made up of civil and mechanical engineers of all skill and experience levels and are working under the supervision and mentorship of Professional Engineers.

What You'll Do

  • Manage and oversee design work by external consultants, in accordance with company and industry standards, including scope, schedules, and quality assurance
  • Develop, coordinate, and review internal design drawings for natural gas engineering projects, in accordance with company and industry standards
  • Manage multiple projects, coordinate project scopes or change, and prioritize workload, collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Design or coordinate the design of complex utility crossings (e.g., bridges, culverts, railroads)
  • Assess project scopes early to identify permitting, local requirements, infrastructure conflicts, and risks
  • Conduct site visits as required to collect field data and support design development
  • Conduct team QA/QC reviews, to assist with final Issued for Construction (IFC) plan production
  • Review and update System Operating Procedures (SOP's) to ensure alignment with IFC designs and company Gas Work Methods
  • Provide engineering support during construction, coordinating design reviews or project changes with construction supervisors
  • Assist our permitting groups with right-of-way efforts, including local/state permits, easements, and any necessary coordination
  • Assist mentoring and developing engineering staff, supporting team growth and knowledge transfer
  • Participate in our Engineering Competency Development Program (ECDP) - training program to learn fundamental gas work knowledge

About You

  • ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science degree, or advanced degree, in Civil or Mechanical Engineering required
  • 10 years of professional experience in civil or mechanical engineering, or 8 years if licensed as a Massachusetts Professional Engineer (PE) required. Experience must be postgraduate professional work; coops and internships are not counted
  • Experience working on gas utility projects in either a consulting capacity or working directly at a utility preferred
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD or similar design products in a design capacity required
  • Utility design experience on horizontal projects, civil or mechanical, required
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite required
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS software or experience using preferred
  • Excellent coordination, problem, solving, and interpersonal skills required
  • Familiarity with Power Automate, VBA, and SQL preferred
  • Valid U.S. driver's license required
  • Ability to utilize a personal vehicle, as some job-related travel should be anticipated (job-related travel will be reimbursed per the company's travel policy)

Salary

$142,000 - $166,000 a year

Please be advised that due to the nature of this position, incumbents are subject to federal Drug & Alcohol safety regulations governing US Department of Transportation ("DOT") covered positions, including the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Pipeline Hazardous Material Safety Administration (PHMSA). As such, the Company's testing programs and policies regarding the use of federally prohibited drugs or alcohol, for recreational or medical purposes, will remain in effect for these safety-sensitive, DOT covered positions.
