Job Summary

Coordinate day-to-day cancer registry operations to ensure timely, accurate data collection and full compliance with departmental, organizational, State of Michigan, NCDB, and CoC requirements. Key responsibilities include triaging internal/external requests and communications, maintaining tracking systems, mining and reporting data, supporting quality control, abstracting and follow-up processes, maintaining the registry SharePoint site, and coordinating activities to meet state law and accreditation standards.

Responsibilities*

  • Serve as a liaison among the manager, Cancer Registry staff, Revenue Cycle, Cancer Center faculty, administration, and external customers, triage and coordinate requests for Cancer Registry data and related communications.
  • Maintain the Request for Information (RFI) tracking system for all treatment-related requests.
  • Use working knowledge of KACI and Cancer Registry systems to extract, merge, validate, and format large-volume datasets into clear, professional deliverables for requestors.
  • Contribute data validation activities and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Support Cancer Registry patient follow-up activities, serving as a point of contact for follow-up responses and updating deceased/expired patient status in the registry database.
  • Apply extensive knowledge of Commission on Cancer (CoC) accreditation standards, policies, procedures, reporting requirements, and survey processes; support accreditation-related activities as needed.
  • Maintain and curate the Cancer Registry knowledge repository in SharePoint.
  • Demonstrate understanding of university, departmental, and unit policies and procedures; seek clarification when needed.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable safety programs.
  • Maintain proficiency with relevant work processes, tools, and clinical/administrative applications required to perform job duties.
  • Participate in the Michigan Quality System/Continuous Quality Improvement efforts and apply Lean Thinking concepts in daily work.
  • Meet or exceed departmental/unit quality and productivity standards.
  • Demonstrate initiative through ongoing development of knowledge and skills.
  • Participate in departmental/unit activities, including staff meetings and in-services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental efficiency.

Required Qualifications*

  • An associates degree in health information technology (HIT) and current certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) OR 2 years of work experience in a healthcare setting working with an electronic health record (EHR).
  • Extensive experience using Microsoft applications. Including, but not limited to Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and SharePoint.
  • Has a good understanding of basic computer skills and system logic and can effectively organize and manage tasks in a healthcare setting.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology with the ability to understand complex medical documentation.
  • Must be able to accurately gather and review medical information from different sources and decide what is needed to support cancer registry operations.
  • Capable of working both independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision.
  • Strong communication skills are required for effective interactions with patients, families, clinicians, and staff.
  • Knowledge of healthcare accreditation standards and regulatory requirements.

Modes of Work

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
