Job Description

Senior Python Software Engineer (ETL/Data Engineering)

Location: McLean, VA (Fully Onsite)

Employment Type: Contract

Duration: Through December 31, 2026

Pay Rate: Up to $120/hr (W2/C2C)

Overview

We are seeking a Senior Python Software Engineer to support a large-scale data modernization initiative. This role focuses on designing, enhancing, and optimizing data pipelines and ETL applications that drive critical business processes.

You will play a key role in building scalable data solutions, ensuring data accuracy, and improving system performance across enterprise data platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Refactor and modernize existing ETL components to improve scalability, performance, and maintainability
  • Design and implement robust data pipelines sourcing from enterprise data warehouses
  • Perform end-to-end and parallel testing to ensure data integrity across systems
  • Develop data quality checks, profiling processes, and monitoring frameworks
  • Write clean, high-quality code with strong unit and integration test coverage
  • Collaborate across data, API, and infrastructure teams to deliver end-to-end solutions
  • Troubleshoot defects, reduce technical debt, and drive continuous improvements
  • Support platform upgrades, cloud migrations, and adoption of new technologies
  • Participate in design discussions, code reviews, and technical documentation
  • Document solutions and findings to support knowledge sharing and future enhancements

Required Qualifications

  • 5 years of software development experience with Python
  • Strong hands-on experience with:
    • Python (including pandas, numpy)
    • Git for version control
    • SQL and relational databases (SQL Server, Snowflake, or Databricks)
    • Unit testing frameworks (e.g., Pytest)
  • Experience building and maintaining ETL/data pipeline solutions
  • 1-2 years of experience with containerization tools (Docker, Kubernetes, or similar)
  • Strong understanding of software engineering best practices and design principles
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills
  • Experience working in Agile development environments
Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field
  • Experience working directly with stakeholders to gather requirements and drive delivery
  • Familiarity with tools such as JIRA for tracking and project management
  • Cloud or data engineering certifications

Core Skill Set

  • Python development (data-focused)
  • ETL / data pipeline engineering
  • SQL & database technologies (Snowflake, Databricks, SQL Server)
  • Git version control
  • Unit testing / automation (Pytest)
  • Containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Java or additional programming languages
  • Exposure to cloud platforms or certifications (AWS/Azure/GCP)
