This Position
- Leads the City's bridge inspection team by planning and executing NBIS bridge inspections and ancillary sign structures inspection.
- Designs in-house repairs and develops maintenance schedules for static and movable bridges' structural, mechanical and electrical components.
- Supervises an engineer and welders, mechanics, and electricians in the inspection and maintenance of critical infrastructure.
- Writes and/or reviews inspection reports, structure inventory & appraisal sheets, sketches, and element datasheets. Reviews consultant's inspection reports.
- Performs and/or reviews load rating for structures.
- Responds to after-hours breakdowns at movable bridges and other bridge or weather incidents.
- Works with other divisions or departments within the City to complete repair or replacement projects.
- Virginia Professional Engineer license (structural engineer preferred).
- NBIS team leader designation and ability to supervise in-house staff (engineer, bridge maintenance mechanics, and electricians) preferred. Obtain within 12 months of employment.
- Possess or ability to complete National Highway Institute course No. 130055-Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges, 130078-Non-Redundant Steel Tension Member Inspection, and 130087-Inspection of Ancillary Structures.
- Ability to obtain VDOT work zone safety setup, fall protection, and confined space certifications.
- Ability to understand normal movable bridge operations and troubleshoot operational issues.
- Good supervisory, interpersonal, and technical skills. Ability to interpret and explain maintenance needs and corrective actions.
- Ability to prioritize, track, and oversee projects with respect to schedule and budget.
- Ability to direct personnel during weather incidents and communicate progress to department command centers.
- Must be certified to operate the City's movable bridges within 24 months of hire (in-house training provided).
