• Minimum 1 year surgical experience required
• Total joint experience required
• Familiarity with:
  • PCA pumps
  • Narcotics & reversal agents (e.g., Narcan)
  • Sepsis management
  • TPN & lipids

Unit: Med Surg / Tele – Inpatient Surgical (3rd Floor)
Beds: 48 (two buildings)

Nurse:Patient Ratios

• Days/Nights: 1:4–6
• LPNs available
• Virtual admission & discharge nurses support
• Primary care nursing model frequently used (must be comfortable with this)

Required Certifications

• BLS
• NIHSS

Common Diagnoses / Patient Types

• Neuro: laminectomy, cervical fusion, LESI
• General surgery: ostomies, hernia repair
• Orthopedics: total hips/knees
• Vascular: fem-pop bypass, BKA, AKA
• Other: PICC, TPN, lipids, dialysis catheter insertions (dialysis also on 3rd floor)
• Medical: DM, sepsis, chronic pain (narcotics), IV antibiotics
• Post-op: PCA, some epidurals, urgent OR cases

 Drips

• Heparin titration required
• Other titratable drips per protocol

Telemetry

• Tele monitor tech available
• RNs required to interpret strips
• Monitor system: Draeger

Charge Nurse / House Supervisor

• Day shift: charge is usually a staff RN (Blessing staff)
• Nights: charge may function as house supervisor at times
• Charge takes reduced assignment to assist unit

Nurse Aides

• Yes, CNA support available
• CNAs may be pulled as sitters
• Higher CNA availability on nights

Respiratory / Equipment

• CPAP (home units)
• Airvo possible
• BiPAP occasionally (stays on unit)
• RT manages respiratory equipment

Shifts & Scheduling

• 3 × 12-hour shifts (starts at 7)
• No guaranteed block scheduling
• Schedule released 6 weeks in advance

Weekend Requirements

• Every other weekend (Sat/Sun)

Holiday Requirements

• Rotational holiday coverage with core staff

Call / Standby

• None

Floating

• Float to similar units only
• If floated to higher acuity: functions as help/resource, no patient assignment

Scrubs / Dress Code

• Black scrubs

Orientation

• First day: 12–14 hours (modules general orientation)
• Additional: 1 × 12-hour shift on unit with preceptor
