Job Summary

Responsible for laboratory operations in the technical area(s) of the hospitals and clinics within the health enterprise, which may include department, discipline, and/or shift oversight. Supervises the implementation of enterprise laboratory strategies and standards through close collaboration with site leaders. Ensures peak laboratory operations by driving optimization of resources, financial performance, growth, safety, teammate engagement, and quality in achieving health goals and objectives. This includes planning, monitoring, and implementing laboratory operations in a cost-effective, quality, and service-oriented manner.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

  • Demonstrated leadership skills including project management, decision making, delegation, team building, customer service, and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to grow leaders through coaching, guidance, and development planning.
  • Advanced knowledge of regulatory compliance, accrediting, and licensing agency requirements.
  • Current knowledge of medical and technical advancements to plan for future growth and development.
  • Intermediate computer skills including knowledge and experience with laboratory information systems.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
  • Frequently lifts up to 10 lbs. Occasionally lifts up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, twist, and bend the majority of the workday.
  • May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, and/or infectious agents.
  • Will be exposed to human blood and body fluids.
  • Must wear appropriate safety protection, i.e., laboratory coats, gloves, gowns, and/or eye protection.
  • Must be able to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • May be required to travel, therefore may be exposed to inclement weather and adverse road conditions.

Preferred Skills/Experience/Qualities

  • Prefers 5 years of experience (blood bank) with good people skills and communication.
  • Flexibility and willingness to promote a positive culture.
  • Familiarity with writing policy and adapting to changes; past leadership experience.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements (e.g., CAP clear regulation).
  • Ability to cross collaborate with other leaders.

Major Responsibilities

  • Assumes responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the department including providing work direction, expertise, and guidance to the staff. Oversees the clinical laboratory testing, evaluation of results, and the proficiency of testing.
  • Actively participates in projects to meet strategic initiatives including implementation and development of quantitative outcomes.
  • Monitors budget compliance. Analyzes laboratory fiscal needs, and departmental performance, and takes action to address variances.
  • Collaborates and implements performance improvement processes to optimize teammate engagement, and physician and patient satisfaction.
  • Ensures quality, regulatory, accreditation, compliance, and competency standards are met. Ensures compliance with current policies, procedures, and standardization and/or consolidation decisions.
  • Coordinates orientation, training, and competency testing of staff and/or students. Maintains competency, as needed, in test systems and processes in defined discipline for area of responsibility. Serves as a technical resource for staff.
  • Complies with the quality plan by implementing and monitoring quality indicators. Reviews laboratory results for quality, accuracy, and validity. Documents and implements corrective action as appropriate.
  • Selects, coaches, and develops team. Sets clear expectations to inspire and motivate the team. Manages performance by recognizing achievement, providing feedback, and administering progressive discipline when necessary. Recommends hiring, compensation changes, promotions, corrective action decisions, and terminations.
  • Responsible for understanding and adhering to the organization's Code of Ethical Conduct and for ensuring that people actions, and the actions of employees supervised, comply with the policies, regulations, and laws applicable to the organization's business.

Experience Required

Typically requires 3 years of experience in technical laboratory services and operations.

Schedule Notes

Exempt position with evening shift hours from Monday to Friday. Incentives include a sign-on bonus and relocation assistance based on eligibility criteria.

Interview Questions

Please ensure that the following questions are included in the submission package:

  • Describe your direct Blood Bank oversight experience. What complexity level was the lab, and what percentage of your role was dedicated specifically to Blood Bank operations versus other lab disciplines?
  • What FDA, AABB, CAP, or Joint Commission Blood Bank inspections have you personally led or managed? Can you walk through a challenging finding and how you resolved it?
  • Tell me about your experience managing high-complexity transfusion services. What testing platforms, blood product volumes, trauma level, or specialty services (massive transfusion, antibody workups, IRL support, etc.) were involved?
  • Have you overseen Blood Bank policy development, validation studies, competency programs, or corrective action plans? Please provide specific examples.
  • Describe your hands-on experience with blood product management, regulatory documentation, and maintaining compliance with FDA/AABB standards.
  • What Blood Bank LIS, middleware, or instrumentation have you worked with directly? How involved were you in troubleshooting or implementation?
  • Can you share an example where you identified and corrected a patient safety or compliance risk within Blood Bank operations?
  • How recently have you worked directly in Blood Bank leadership, and how current is your regulatory knowledge related to transfusion services?
  • This role requires strong Blood Bank depth over general lab breadth. Why do you feel your experience specifically aligns with a high-complexity Blood Bank leadership environment?
