A day in this role Picture your morning: you calibrate your instruments, load the airflow hood and manometer, and head to a busy job site. By mid-morning, you’re reviewing plans and control sequences, verifying design airflows, and fine-tuning dampers. After lunch, you’re setting pump speeds, measuring coil temperatures, and documenting readings for a polished TAB report. Before day’s end, you sync up with the project manager, the mechanical contractor, and the commissioning agent to resolve a field discrepancy—ensuring the system performs exactly as designed. What you’ll do Test, adjust, and balance commercial and residential HVAC systems—both air and hydronic—to meet performance and comfort targets aligned with design specifications.Measure and tune airflow, pressure, and temperature across fans, diffusers, dampers, pumps, and coils.Deploy specialized instruments including manometers, airflow hoods, anemometers, tachometers, and flow meters to validate system operation.Interpret mechanical drawings, blueprints, and specifications, along with air distribution schematics and control sequences.Record readings, deficiencies, and final settings; compile clear, complete TAB reports.Spot and communicate issues—improper installs, control faults, or design deviations—and propose corrective actions.Collaborate closely with project managers, mechanical contractors, and commissioning agents to close out punch items and align results to design.Maintain, calibrate, and safeguard test equipment on a regular schedule.Execute work in accordance with NEBB, AABC, or TABB standards, as applicable.Follow all company and job site safety procedures and policies. What you bring Education: High school diploma or GED required; technical/trade school in HVAC preferred.Experience: 2 years in HVAC testing, balancing, or mechanical service.Certifications (preferred): NEBB, AABC, or TABB; OSHA 10/30; EPA 608 or equivalent.Technical strengths: Proficiency with airflow/pressure testing tools; solid understanding of HVAC operation and controls; strong blueprint and duct/piping layout reading skills.Soft skills: Detail-driven, analytical, and thorough documentation; clear communicator; self-starter who can work independently and within a team. Where you’ll work Primarily in the field at construction sites, existing buildings, and industrial facilities.Travel to multiple job locations as needed; occasional overtime or weekend work may be required.Physical demands include climbing ladders, working at heights, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
