What are the responsibilities and job description for the Optometrist position at Talent Geek?
Established Private Practice | Path to Ownership | Full Autonomy
A well-respected, medically focused private practice in Northern Sacramento is seeking a full-time Optometrist to serve as the primary doctor at one of its two locations. This isn’t a standard associate role, it’s a genuine opportunity for the right doctor to run their own practice, on their own terms, without the upfront risk that typically comes with ownership.
The Opportunity.
Here’s what makes this different: there’s no commitment required up front. The first year is intentionally structured as a mutual trial run, and a chance for the incoming doctor to find out if practice ownership is the right fit for them, and for both sides to make sure they work well together. If ownership ends up not being the right path, that’s genuinely okay. They’re flexible, and there’s a long-term future here either way.
They’re simply looking for someone who is curious about ownership and open to exploring it, not someone who has already committed to the idea, and not someone who just wants to clock in and clock out.
What Day-to-Day Actually Looks Like
This is a full-scope, medically focused practice, not a refraction mill. A typical day is intentionally paced:
- Full eye exams scheduled every 30 minutes
- 2–3 follow-ups or contact lens evaluations in the morning, same in the afternoon
- No pressure to rush patients through — time to actually practice the way you were trained
The incoming OD will provide the full range of optometric care, including:
- Adult, senior, pediatric, and diabetic eye exams
- Contact lens exams and fittings
- Dry eye therapy and myopia control
- Digital eye strain management
- Eye disease diagnosis and management
- Emergency eye care and laser vision correction consultations
Training on all equipment and specialty services will be provided.
Autonomy & Support
The incoming OD will be the primary doctor at their location, with their own schedule, and their patients. The owner will be hands-on during the transition to make sure the adjustment is smooth, and the two doctors will support each other as needed (coverage for vacations, sick days, and so on). But day-to-day, you’re running your location.
If you have ideas for new services or want to grow the practice, they’re open to investing in the right person. They’re not looking for someone to maintain the status quo, and want someone motivated to build something.
Compensation
Base salary: $140,000–$160,000 DOE, with flexibility on structure
Compensation is negotiable, but for a doctor interested in the ownership path, earnings potential as a partner in an established practice is a very different conversation than the starting salary.
Position details: W-2 | Full-time | Monday–Friday
Ideal Candidate
- Licensed (or license-eligible) Optometrist in California
- Patient-focused, with strong communication skills
- Wants to practice beyond routine refractions
- At least curious about practice ownership & open to exploring what that could look like
- Interested in long-term stability and professional growth, not just a job
Location & Lifestyle
The Sacramento region is one of California’s most livable areas — excellent schools, family-friendly neighborhoods, and a lower cost of living than the Bay Area or Southern California. Outdoor access is exceptional: Lake Tahoe is roughly 90 minutes away, Napa Valley is under an hour, and the Sierra foothills are right in your backyard. For the right doctor, it’s a genuinely great place to put down roots.
