Scrub Technician – Plastic Surgery Center (ASC/Procedure Center)
Position Summary
The Scrub Technician supports safe, efficient surgical care by preparing the operating room, maintaining a sterile field, and directly assisting the surgeon during plastic surgery procedures. This role requires expert sterile technique, strong knowledge of surgical instruments and supplies, and a commitment to patient safety, infection prevention, and teamwork.
Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesPre-Op / Room Setup
- Prepares OR suites for scheduled cases (opens sterile supplies, sets up back table and Mayo stand, verifies instrument sets, and checks equipment readiness).
- Reviews preference cards, case requirements, and specialty supply needs (e.g., implants, liposuction/tumescent supplies, drains, dressings).
- Performs initial counts with circulating nurse per policy (sponges, sharps, instruments).
- Assists with patient positioning, prepping, and draping as directed (within scope and policy).
- Ensures proper availability and function of equipment (e.g., electrosurgical unit, suction, warmers, sequential compression devices).
Intraoperative Scrub Role (Sterile Technique Expert)
- Maintains sterile technique at all times and immediately addresses breaks in sterility.
- Anticipates surgeon needs and passes instruments, sutures, supplies, and medications (as allowed by policy).
- Assists with retraction, suctioning, and exposure as directed by surgeon and RN circulator.
- Handles and labels specimens in coordination with the circulating RN per policy.
- Performs ongoing counts with RN circulator (initial, closing, relief, and final counts) and escalates discrepancies immediately.
Post-Op / Turnover & Decontamination Support
- Breaks down sterile field safely; assists with transport of instruments to decontamination per policy.
- Assists with room turnover (cleaning/disinfection of OR surfaces and equipment per infection control protocol).
- Restocks supplies and prepares rooms for next case; reports low stock/expired items.
- Supports instrument processing workflow by organizing sets for SPD and communicating missing instruments or repair needs.
Safety, Compliance & Quality
- Adheres to infection prevention standards (hand hygiene, PPE, aseptic technique, traffic control, environmental cleaning).
- Follows OSHA, exposure control, sharps safety, and waste management policies.
- Participates in drills and emergency readiness (e.g., malignant hyperthermia, fire safety, code response per facility role).
- Completes required competencies, annual trainings, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Maintains professional communication and teamwork with surgeons, anesthesia, nursing, and front-office teams.
Pay: $35.00 - $45.00 per hour
