Help People Build Lives Beyond Addiction

Talbot Health Services is seeking a skilled, dependable, and compassionate Behavioral Health Counselor to join our outpatient treatment teams in Mansfield, Ohio

This is not a position focused on simply completing appointments and entering notes. Our counselors build therapeutic relationships, help clients understand the patterns affecting their recovery, develop practical treatment goals, and work alongside an interdisciplinary team to help individuals create meaningful and sustainable change.

The successful candidate will be clinically grounded, organized, accountable, and comfortable working with individuals experiencing substance use disorders, co-occurring behavioral health concerns, relapse risk, and complex life circumstances.

Candidates may indicate a preference for the Mansfield location, the Clyde location, or consideration for both.

Primary Responsibilities

The Behavioral Health Counselor will:

  • Provide individual, group, and family counseling services based on client needs, assigned services, professional credentials, and applicable scope-of-practice requirements.

  • Complete or contribute to behavioral health and substance use disorder assessments within the counselor’s authorized scope of practice.

  • Develop individualized, person-centered treatment plans that identify measurable goals, clinical interventions, strengths, barriers, and discharge needs.

  • Facilitate structured, clinically meaningful groups addressing topics such as recovery skills, relapse prevention, emotional regulation, coping strategies, decision-making, healthy relationships, and personal accountability.

  • Evaluate client progress and adjust treatment approaches when goals, symptoms, risks, or circumstances change.

  • Identify relapse indicators, behavioral health concerns, safety risks, and barriers that may interfere with treatment participation or recovery.

  • Provide crisis intervention, safety planning, and appropriate referrals within the counselor’s training and professional scope.

  • Coordinate care with medical providers, nursing staff, case managers, peer support professionals, community providers, and other members of the treatment team.

  • Participate in case consultations, treatment-team meetings, clinical supervision, discharge planning, and continuity-of-care activities.

  • Connect clients with appropriate medical, psychiatric, housing, employment, transportation, recovery-support, and community resources.

  • Maintain accurate, timely, and clinically appropriate documentation, including progress notes, assessments, treatment plans, treatment-plan reviews, discharge summaries, and other required records.

  • Manage an assigned caseload while meeting expectations for service delivery, documentation timeliness, client engagement, and professional communication.

  • Maintain client confidentiality and comply with Talbot policies, professional ethical standards, HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2, payer requirements, and applicable Ohio behavioral health regulations.

  • Practice within all credential-specific supervision requirements and immediately elevate matters that fall outside the counselor’s authorized scope of practice.

  • Treat every client with dignity and respect while maintaining appropriate clinical boundaries and accountability.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must possess an active Ohio credential in good standing that is appropriate for the services assigned to the position. Talbot will consider applicants holding one or more of the following:

  • Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistant, CDCA

  • Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor II, LCDC II

  • Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor III, LCDC III

  • Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor, LICDC

  • Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor Clinical Supervisor, LICDC-CS

  • Licensed Professional Counselor, LPC

  • Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, LPCC

  • Licensed Social Worker, LSW

  • Licensed Independent Social Worker, LISW

  • Another active Ohio behavioral health credential authorizing the candidate to perform the assigned services

Candidates must also demonstrate:

  • An understanding of substance use disorders, recovery, relapse prevention, treatment planning, and person-centered care.

  • The ability to establish rapport while maintaining clear professional and ethical boundaries.

  • Strong written communication and clinical documentation skills.

  • The ability to organize competing priorities and complete required documentation within established timeframes.

  • Sound judgment when responding to clinical concerns, client risk, conflict, or rapidly changing circumstances.

  • The ability to work effectively with clients from different backgrounds and with varying levels of treatment readiness.

  • The ability to collaborate respectfully with clinical, medical, administrative, and community partners.

  • Reliable attendance and consistent professional conduct.

  • The ability to satisfy applicable pre-employment and continued-employment requirements.

Counselors whose credentials require supervision must participate in supervision and comply with all applicable Ohio supervision requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to candidates who have:

  • Previous experience providing outpatient substance use disorder or behavioral health services.

  • Experience with medication-assisted treatment or medications for opioid use disorder.

  • Experience facilitating structured therapeutic groups.

  • Familiarity with ASAM criteria, motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral interventions, trauma-informed care, and relapse-prevention planning.

  • Experience serving clients with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.

  • Experience completing documentation within an electronic health record.

  • Knowledge of Medicaid, managed-care, or other behavioral health documentation requirements.

  • Training in crisis intervention, suicide-risk identification, de-escalation, or safety planning.

What Talbot Is Looking For

  • Accepts supervision and feedback professionally.

  • Remains dependable during challenging clinical situations.

  • Contributes to a respectful, solutions-focused workplace.

  • Wants to perform work that has a direct and lasting impact on clients, families, and the community.
