Position Purpose

The Assistant Technical Director (ATD) supports the Technical Direction team throughout the entire lifecycle of a project — from early planning and design, through fabrication and preparation, to onsite execution. This role partners closely with project managers, designers, vendors, and crews to ensure technical solutions are accurate, safe, and delivered to a high standard. The ATD plays a vital role in bridging creative and technical intent while ensuring projects are executed smoothly, efficiently, and safely.

The ATD provides drafting support as needed to the overall project while tracking documentation and other deliverables as required. They may also be required to coordinate with 3rd party suppliers and have the ability to manage small crews/teams when required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Attend project meetings and site surveys; record and distribute meeting notes as required.
  • Provide drafting support in Vectorworks, creating and managing show drawing files including:
  • Site and ground plans.
  • Layouts and installation drawings.
  • Custom scenic elements for fabrication vendors/shops.
  • Work with assigned partners to iterate designs/drawings, ensuring correct processes are followed.
  • Prepare and track orders and purchasing under the guidance of the Technical Director (e.g., scenery, graphics, AV, etc.).
  • Assist in managing vendor relationships and budgets — obtaining quotes, awarding bids, and coordinating with production partners.
  • Assist in overseeing labor scheduling, budgets, and onsite crews.
  • Assist in leading onsite installations, ensuring builds are performed as specified, safely, and within budget.
  • Collaborate with client-facing team members and provide progress updates directly to clients as needed.
  • Attend meetings and take/publish notes as required
  • Support and help enforce safety standards, policies, and procedures in both design and onsite execution.
  • Stay engaged with industry trends, technologies, and best practices.

Competencies & Expectations

  • Broad understanding of production disciplines including scenic fabrication, rigging, audio, video, lighting, control, and labor logistics.
  • Ability to work effectively in both office and onsite environments (including venues, hotels, convention centers, rehearsal spaces, construction sites, and outdoor locations).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills — written, verbal, and in-person — with the ability to interact professionally with interns, clients, vendors, and senior leadership.
  • Proactive, collaborative, and solution-oriented, with strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to multi-task, adapt quickly, and remain calm under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to work non-traditional hours and travel for extended onsite production (up to 2 weeks).
  • Capable of giving and receiving constructive feedback in a motivating and professional way.
  • Represent the company positively in all external project interactions.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education: HS Diploma/ G.E.D required, Associate or Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years of live event, entertainment, theater, touring, or production experience
  • Functional competencies in staging, rigging, show action, audio, lighting, and video production.
  • Strong 2D and 3D drafting skills in Vectorworks
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD, SketchUp, or similar tools, a plus
  • Proficient understanding of scenic fabrication; ability to create shop-ready drawings, oversee builds, and lead onsite installs.
  • Adobe Creative Suite knowledge is a plus (especially Illustrator for graphics layout).
  • Strong computer skills on Mac or Windows platforms (Microsoft Office required).
  • Familiarity with, or willingness to learn, project management and communication tools such as Slack, Box, Airtable, Asana, Concur, and Google Docs.
  • Willingness & ability to travel for periods of up to 2 weeks for onsite production
