Summary

Under the general direction of the Women and Family Nurse Manager, coordinates and delivers comprehensive care to obstetric patients and newborns throughout the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods. Assists patients with admission, labor and delivery, postpartum recovery, and discharge processes. Utilizes the nursing process to develop and implement individualized plans of care for mothers and newborns. The RN assumes responsibility for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating both direct and indirect nursing care, and for identifying outcomes that promote safe, evidence-based maternal and neonatal care within the obstetric setting.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Performs all aspects in the job description of Women and Family Staff Nurse.
  • Oversees daily clinical operations in Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, and Nursery ensuring the delivery of the highest levels of clinical quality, patient safety, and family-centered care in a cost effective manner.
  • Communicates throughout the day with obstetricians, anesthesiologists, pediatricians, and nursing staff to ensure optimal coordination of maternal and neonatal care.
  • Assists with interviews, orientation, and training of new staff.
  • Ensures adequate staffing levels for labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum, based on patient acuity and census.
  • Participates in departmental growth and quality improvement programs.
  • Serves as a clinical resource and mentor for other nurses, promoting professional growth and evidence-based practice.
  • Implements operational changes and new clinical initiatives as directed by the Women and Family Nurse Manager.
  • Ensures regulatory compliance with maternal and newborn care standards, including readiness for surveys and audits (e.g., Joint Commission, Baby-Friendly, perinatal safety initiatives).
  • Coordinates with Techs, Nurse Manager and Billing department to ensure accurate and complete documentation, billing, and charge capture for obstetric procedures and services.
  • Addresses patient, family, or staff concerns in a timely and professional manner, or escalates to the Nurse Manager as appropriate.
  • Educates staff on optimal use of electronic medical record (EMR) and perinatal monitoring systems, and troubleshoots issues in coordination with IT support.
  • Coordinates departmental stocking, audits, and outdates.
  • Monitors unit staffing patterns, overtime, and expenditures for budgetary compliance, providing justification for variances to the Obstetrics Nurse Manager.
  • Attends perinatal and interdepartmental meetings as needed.
  • Participates in data collection, perinatal quality improvement programs, and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Monitors and maintains department records, logs, and documentation in accordance with hospital policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Participates in developing and updating policies and procedures to reflect current obstetric standards of care and department workflow.
  • Demonstrates system values in all professional interactions and behavior.
  • Complies with all system policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education/Experience

Associate's Degree Degree from college or vocational school from a National League of Nursing (NLN), Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or equivalent accredited school of nursing. The nurse shall have completed a nursing education program that included clinical experiences with actual patients under the supervision of qualified faculty.

1-2 years relevant experience

Required Licenses/Certifications

California Registered Nurse (RN)

  • Upon hire

Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers

  • Upon hire

BLS/ACLS: Employee will be enrolled in the Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS). Entry or Prep Curriculum (depending on their previous BLS and ACLS certification).

  • Within 6 months of hire into job

Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)

  • Upon hire

STABLE

  • Within 6 months of hire into job

Other Experience/Qualifications

Required:

  • One to two years in labor and delivery unit with adequate number of deliveries to ensure competence in all areas of labor, delivery, postpartum and newborn care.
  • Must complete Baby Friendly coursework (Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding) within 6 months of hire.
  • Must complete Relias Fetal monitoring within 3 months of hire.
  • Additional Coursework: GE Health Systems, AWHONN Basic, Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring.

Preferred:

  • Familiar with fetal monitoring high-risk labor/delivery, neonatal and postpartum Internmanagement.
