JOB TITLE: Speech-Language Pathologist

 

JOB DESCRITION NARRATIVE:

 

Speech-Language Pathologists help people develop their communication abilities through diagnosing and treatment of speech, language, voice and swallowing disorders. Their services include prevention, identification, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of communication disorders. Our responsibility is to provide a flexible service with a main goal to promote communicative awareness within the school setting.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Knowledge: Masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology; American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Certificate of Clinical Competence and Oklahoma State License preferred.

 

Skills: Prevention, diagnosis, treatment, habilitation, rehabilitation of communication and related disorders.

 

Machines/Equipment: Audiometer, otoscope, electronic communication devices, oral motor devices/supplies, sterilizing equipment, assessment batteries and protocols, computer, printer, internet access,

 

ESSSENTAIL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • OBJECTIVES - The general objectives are common to all schools.
    • Providing prevention, screening, consultation, assessment and diagnosis, treatment, intervention, management, counseling, and follow-up services for disorders of:
      • speech (i.e. articulation, fluency, resonance, and voice)
      • language (i.e. phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatic/social aspects of communication)
      • swallowing
      • cognitive aspects of communication (attention, memory, problem solving, executive functions)
      • sensory awareness
    • Establishing argumentative and alternative communication techniques and strategies including developing, selecting, prescribing of such systems and devices.
    • Providing services to individuals with hearing loss and their families/care givers.
    • Screening hearing to determine the need for further evaluation and management.
    • Collaborating in the assessment and providing intervention for central auditory processing disorders.
    • Educating and counseling individuals, families, co-workers, educators, and other persons in the community regarding acceptance, adaptation, and decision making about speech, language and swallowing.
    • Addressing behaviors and environments that affect speech, language, and swallowing.
    • Recognizing the need to improve and appropriately accommodate diagnostic and treatment services to individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and adjust treatment and assessment services accordingly.

 

  • RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Observe, screen, and evaluate students with suspected speech, language, and/or swallowing problems.
    • Provide direct and indirect treatment of students aged 3 years to 21 years identified with speech, language, and/or swallowing disorders.
    • Maintain each student’s confidential records.
    • Conduct individualized meetings throughout the school year to maintain state and federally mandated requirement.
    • Act as support staff by providing screenings, evaluations and consultations for the Regional Educational Service Center (RESC) referrals.
    • Meet the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s (ASHA) and the Oklahoma State Board of Examiners’ continuing education requirements.
    • Collaborate with outside community organizations including: Headstart, Sooner Start, Northeastern State University and other allied professionals.
    • Medicaid Billing / Scheduling

 

  • GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Ability to follow through on administrative policies and requests.
    • Ability to work wisely and effectively with parents and other adults, both within the staff and within the community.
    • Participation in community-school activities.
    • Other duties as assigned by supervisor/ principal.
