Bus Driver

We are seeking two (2) qualified and experienced Bus Drivers to join our Transportation Department.

Distinguishing Features of the Class: Operates a school bus on an assigned route and performs minor maintenance tasks in connection with such operation. The operator is responsible for the safety and the conduct of the children who are passengers. The work is performed under the supervision of the Head Bus Driver or Transportation Supervisor with considerable leeway allowed the operator in carrying out the details of the work. Does related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Possession of the appropriate level New York State Driver's License. Drivers must be at least twenty-one years of age and must satisfy the requirements for School Bus Driver as set forth in the Rules and Regulations of the NYS Commissioner of Education.
• Current 19A Licence preferred.

Typical Work Activities (Illustrative Only):

• Operates a school bus on a regular schedule or on special occasions obeying all the traffic laws;
• Checks the operating condition of the bus before starting on a trip;
• Notifies the proper authority of any mechanical failure or lateness;
• Keeps the interior and exterior of the vehicle clean and neat;
• Informs the children about safety practices and reports undisciplined students to the proper authority;
• Maintains records of mileage, routes, times and incidents;
• Prepares and maintains maps of routes and pick up points;
• May be required to operate a station wagon or other similar vehicle;
• Performs such other specific duties as may be assigned.

Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, & Personal Characteristics: Good knowledge of driving safety practices and traffic laws and regulations; ability to operate a bus under difficult driving and road conditions; ability to make minor repairs to the vehicle; the ability to understand and to follow simple oral and written directions; ability to get along well with children and command their respect; mechanical aptitude, mental alertness; dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Hours: Various hours depending upon bus route, 10 months per year

Note: All employees hired must have electronic fingerprint clearance through the NYS Education Department prior to employment. A required fee of $102.50 must be paid by debit or credit card to the New York State Education Department.
