What are the responsibilities and job description for the IT Support Specialist position at System Soft Technologies?
Job Summary:
- We're looking for people with an IT support background because those skills (networking, hardware troubleshooting, and following technical procedures precisely) transfer directly to the work we do: configuring, commissioning, and testing the connected devices we deploy in commercial buildings.
- Day to day, you'll set up and test devices like IoT gateways, sensors, and smart meters before they ship to customer sites, and you'll handle a share of our shipping and receiving to keep equipment moving. No prior IoT experience is required. We'll train you. If you're a quick learner who enjoys hands-on technical work, this is a rare chance to build a specialized, in-demand career without leaving the Gorge.
Responsibilities:
Device Configuration & Testing
- Configure, commission, and test IoT gateways, sensors, and meters following documented procedures
- Connect devices to networks (Ethernet, Wi-Fi, cellular), apply settings, and verify they're communicating correctly before they ship
- Update firmware and troubleshoot devices that don't pass testing
- Record serial numbers, configurations, and test results accurately in our systems
- Help write and improve step-by-step procedures and checklists
- Support basic IT needs at the Hood River office as they come up (occasional)
Shipping & Receiving
- Receive incoming shipments from vendors, check contents against packing slips and purchase orders, and flag discrepancies or damage
- Log received equipment and serial numbers accurately in our inventory and ERP systems
- Pick, pack, and label outgoing orders to customer sites, installer partners, and field technicians
- Prepare shipping paperwork, schedule carrier pickups (UPS, FedEx, freight), and track deliveries
- Help keep the warehouse and staging area organized, with accurate stock counts
Experience:
- 2 years of hands-on IT experience, such as setting up and configuring routers, switches, access points, or firewalls; assigning IP addresses and troubleshooting network connections; updating device firmware; or building, imaging, and deploying computers and other hardware
- Comfortable working with hardware: setting up, connecting, and troubleshooting devices
- Basic networking knowledge: IP addressing, DHCP, DNS, Wi-Fi, routers, and switches
- Exceptional attention to detail. Small mistakes in device setup can cause big problems in the field, so accuracy matters
- A methodical troubleshooting approach and the patience to work through problems step by step
- Ability to follow written procedures precisely and keep clear, organized records
- Clear communication, both in writing and in person, with technical and non-technical people
- Self-motivated and reliable; comfortable working independently once trained
- Able to work on-site in Hood River, OR five days a week
Nice to Have:
- Experience configuring or commissioning IoT devices, sensors, gateways, or other connected hardware
- Familiarity with cellular modems, LoRaWAN, Modbus, BACnet, or other industrial/building protocols
- Experience with serial/console connections, web-based device configuration portals, or command-line tools
- Experience with ticketing, inventory, or ERP systems (e.g., Jira, Zoho)
- Experience with shipping and receiving, inventory control, or warehouse operations
