Job Title: Systems Engineer
Location: Rockville, MD
Shift/Schedule: Standard business hours, Monday–Friday (2 days onsite per week). Some flexibility depending on patching/maintenance needs. On-call for emergencies and occasional weekend work for critical updates.
Pay Rate: $38–$48/hr (W2)
Role Type: 6 Month Contract-to-Hire

We’re seeking a Systems Engineer who will take ownership of enterprise storage, backup, and virtualization systems within a hybrid on-prem/Azure environment. This position offers the opportunity to work with modern storage arrays, backup utilities, and virtual infrastructure while supporting critical systems that power scientific discovery and operational excellence.

You’ll work alongside a skilled infrastructure team to ensure reliability, scalability, and security across the organization’s storage, virtualization, and data protection platforms.

Overview
The Systems Engineer will play a key role in managing and optimizing storage, virtualization, and cloud infrastructure, with a strong focus on network storage, backup, and disaster recovery projects. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with VMware, Azure VMs, and enterprise storage technologies such as iSCSI storage arrays, SAN/NAS systems, and backup utilities like Commvault or Veeam.
 

• Environment is approximately 90% Windows / 10% Linux (Linux experience not required).
• Responsibilities include managing network/server-attached storage and Azure VM virtualization.
• Primary focus on storage performance, availability, and data protection.
• Team includes two senior systems engineers and a Manager of Operations; may include light mentoring of junior staff (Tier 1 support is outsourced).
• Candidates with a life sciences, biotech, or pharma background are preferred but not required.

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Science, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field and at least 2 years of experience managing and maintaining enterprise systems

  High School Diploma and 6 years of equivalent systems engineering experience

• Hands-on experience with storage systems (SAN, NAS, iSCSI, disk arrays, and cloud-based storage solutions)
• Experience with backup and disaster recovery tools (Commvault, Veeam, MSP360, F-Point, etc.)
• Proficiency managing VMware virtual environments and Azure VMs — Azure is a must-have
• Solid understanding of Windows-based administration (Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, etc.)
• Familiarity with Azure storage and general cloud management
• Ability to troubleshoot, optimize, and document infrastructure solutions

• Familiarity with basic networking/routing/switching concepts
• Experience with storage performance tuning and capacity planning
• Previous experience in pharma, biotech, or life sciences environments
• Knowledge of GAMP or similar compliance frameworks

• Manage and optimize storage hardware and software, ensuring performance, availability, and reliability.
• Implement and maintain backup and disaster recovery solutions, performing regular testing and validation.
• Support and maintain multi-cluster VMware environments bAzure virtual machines.
• Administer and maintain a Windows (and limited Linux) 24x7x365 production environment — AD, DHCP, DNS, SNMP, NTP, DFS, CIFS, etc.
• Perform capacity planning, monitoring, and reporting for storage and virtualization systems.
• Collaborate with Systems Engineers and Operations to perform patches, upgrades, and system maintenance.
• Provide escalation support for complex infrastructure issues.
• Participate in the evaluation and implementation of new storage, virtualization, and backup technologies.
• Communicate project timelines, risks, and system changes across IT and business teams.
