Job Description

Lifeguards are responsible for ensuring the safety of all pool users by supervising aquatic facilities, enforcing policies, and responding to emergencies in accordance with established protocols. They also assist with facility operations, maintain accurate records, and foster effective communication and professional relationships with staff and guests.

Education and Experience

  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Contribute a minimum of 5-10 hours/week; and additional special event hours required as needed.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills.
  • Maintain a commitment to customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Provide supervision of aquatic facilities and pool users.
  • Enforce Recreation policies and procedures to promote participant safety and satisfaction.
  • Assist in the maintenance of accurate records of hourly pool chemistry and user counts.
  • Aid in opening and closing procedures and facility inspections as appropriate.
  • Attend and actively participate in mandatory monthly in-service training and other annual required trainings as scheduled.
  • Respond to emergency situations according to established departmental protocols that include care for injured, initiation of Emergency Action Plans, notification of appropriate university authorities, and completion of paperwork.
  • Develop professional relationships with co-workers, participants and guests.
  • Maintain effective communication with co-workers and professional staff.
  • Report any pool maintenance, safety, or security problems promptly and thoroughly.
