Job Description

Senior University Counsel for Risk/Litigation will work with a team representing the University in litigation matters, working closely with the OUC to bring litigation in-house, managing matters from the outset to reduce the University’s exposure to liability and supervising outside counsel assignments where necessary to manage litigation budgets/costs. The Senior University Counsel will directly handle complex litigation, government investigations and internal investigations, and will be responsible for overseeing the OUC’s training program. Senior University Counsel for Litigation will also handle affirmative litigation for the University. The Senior University Counsel for Litigation will mentor and support the OUC litigation team. This position is part of a collaborative professional team focused on delivering comprehensive high-level legal advice to a very sophisticated client base. Will serve as a trusted legal advisor to the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel, other members of the senior administration, and key faculty and staff positions.

Education and Experience

  • Juris Doctorate from ABA accredited law school.
  • Ten plus (10 ) years of legal experience in an academic institution, business or related organization, or relevant law firm experience.
  • Licensed to practice law in New York or eligible for admission within twelve (12) months.
  • Licensed in good standing without any instances of suspension, revocation, censure or other adverse events in any jurisdiction.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Significant legal experience advising smart and exacting clients. ’ Superior legal negotiating, drafting, and presentation skills.
  • Organized self-starter with strong work ethic and a `can do’ attitude; a quick study with ability to manage deadlines.
  • High moral and ethical standards that reflect honesty, integrity and reliability. ’ Must be detail oriented and deadline driven.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to understand and convey complex legal principles in readily understandable terms to senior administrators and faculty.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain professional collaborative relationships with diverse groups across an organization, as well as stakeholders and community members.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and delivering comprehensive training program on high-risk areas.
  • Institutional compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies.
  • Defending and prosecuting lawsuits on behalf of the university.
  • Under the direction of the Senior Vice President/General Counsel and the Deputy General Counsel, the Senior University Counsel for Litigation will manage and advise the university in litigation and pre-litigation disputes, and litigation risks related to various operational matters.
  • Retaining external counsel and development of efficient and cost-effective programs for retention and management of external law Firms.
  • Other duties as assigned.
