Job Description

Exercise some judgment to plan and perform a sequence of operations involved in automotive repair.

Education and Experience

Advanced knowledge of automotive repair equivalent to 1-2 years of practical trades training or previous work experience.

At least four years additional practical experience, including working knowledge of diagnostic computer scanning tools.

Must provide own hand tools.

Valid NYS Class B with S endorsement CDL license.

Valid NYS Inspector’s license.

The ability to drive both manual and automatic transmission vehicles.

Skills and Knowledge

CDL license is preferred

Conduct intake for service requests; distribute assignments to mechanics, including overtime assignments as necessary. Coordinate and schedule work assignments to ensure efficient operations and minimize service delays. Order inventory and maintain records. Communicate with customers and schedule appointments. Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical problems to ensure all University emergency vehicles are in good working order. Conduct regular critical safety assessments of University vehicles, and ensure compliance with DOT and other safety requirements for high priority vehicles, including but not limited to, University ambulance, Executive transport vehicle, University shuttles and vans, and the Department of Public Safety fleet.

Responsibilities

May be called in at any time during the day or night, 24/7, to service priority vehicles. Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical problems in cars, trucks, tractors, pay loaders, grounds equipment and other heavy equipment. Tune engines including replacing plugs, points, condensers, coils, setting timing, etc. Reline brakes, repair and rebuild starters, generators, power steering and power brake units. Must be able to remove, repair, and overhaul air compressors, air, dryer, and motors. Rewire or install new wiring harness as required. Tear down and rebuild engines. Maintain records and call-in equipment for preventive maintenance

Physical Requirements

Frequent bending at the waist and below the knee (50% – 80% of shift), Frequent kneeling, stooping and crouching (75% – 80% of shift), Frequent twisting and bending of head, neck, and torso (75% – 95% of shift), Full range of arm movement (extension, twisting, and bending of arm and shoulder, reaching overhead, etc.) (50% – 95%), Visual and cognitive capability sufficient to perform visual inspection of vehicles, diagnose problems and make repairs , Wrist and finger dexterity and fine motor skills sufficient to use and use a variety of hand tools and perform repair functions (e.g. replace spark plugs, install wiring, etc.. Able to handle and operate power tools, repetitive arm movement, able to perform all physical functions needed to drive vehicles with manual and automatic transmissions, able to climb up into and out of vehicles, able to work in conditions of extreme heat and cold, may be exposed to dust, exhaust, fumes, strong odors, solvents, cleaning products, and other chemicals, and able to lie on back and work underneath vehicles.

Tools/Equipment

Operate a variety of garage equipment including hydraulic lift, hydraulic jack, chain fall, hydraulic press, diagnostic computer scanning tools, etc. Use a wide variety of hand tools. Operate vehicles including tow truck. Must provide own hand tools
