Pay Range $25.00 - $26.65 Per Hour Pay Determination

Pay rates at Syracuse University are based on a combination of factors including, but not limited to, the job responsibilities; the candidate’s education, training, work experience and key competencies; the university’s strategic priorities; internal peer equity; applicable federal, state, local laws, grant funding and contractual requisites; and external market analyses.

Staff Level S4 FLSA Status Non-exempt Hours

Standard University business hours (This is a 37.5 hour per week position)

8:30am – 5:00pm (academic year)

8:00am – 4:30pm (summer)

The Syracuse University Law Library Within SU Libraries Is Searching For An Access Services Supervisor. This Position Coordinates Workflow Between Departments In The SU College Of Law Library. The Access Services Supervisor Will

  • Hire, train and evaluate 20-25 Law Library Student Assistants and direct the work of one Library Technician.
  • Schedule staff coverage of the Law Library Circulation Desk.
  • Provide direct services to Law Library users, answering reference and general questions from students, faculty, and members of the University and Syracuse communities, including evening and weekends on rotation.
  • Resolve patron account issues and exercise independent judgment in meeting the needs of Law Library users.
  • Work collaboratively with the Collection Management Supervisor to analyze workflows and propose and implement policy changes and process improvements that impact both Public Services and Technical Services.
  • Establish priorities within the Circulation and Technical Services departments for processing gift collections, assign looseleaf filing and other student tasks, and apportion clerical work between departments.
  • Make acquisition decisions for the Law Library’s Casual Reading collection and maintain other specialty Law Library collections.

SU Libraries / Library

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Supervisory experience in a public services or customer service environment.
  • 1 year of experience in a public, academic, or special library.
  • MS/LIS in progress or a career goal of academic librarianship strongly preferred.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Strong supervisory and management skills; discernment and judgment in supervising staff and services.
  • Technical proficiency with standard computing applications and the ability to learn specialized application software.
  • Commitment to fostering a strong sense of community among Law Library users, staff, and student assistants.
  • High degree of professionalism and the ability to both work independently and to interact effectively with colleagues, faculty, staff, students, and the public.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to write effectively for multiple Law Library audiences.

Responsibilities

Daily Operations (35%)

  • Manage the daily operations of the Law Library Circulation Desk, effectively and efficiently utilizing personnel resources to meet Law Library goals.
  • Coordinate staff coverage of the Law Library Circulation Desk between Public and Technical services.
  • Direct the work of staff and student employees to ensure that clerical tasks are carried out consistent with Law Library priorities.
  • Provide guidance, instruction, and supervision to the Library Technician IV for Circulation, and hire, train, and evaluate 20-25 Law Library student assistants.

Customer Service (20%)

  • Provide direct Law Library patron service by staffing the Circulation Desk to ensure no gaps in coverage, including evenings and weekends on rotation.
  • Answer student and faculty questions and help them find items they need from the Circulation Desk, Reference/Reserves, Special Collections and the general collection.
  • Resolve patron account issues and exercise independent judgment to make loan and book fine policy exceptions.

Workflow (20%)

  • Research, recommend, and implement workflow improvements in Circulation.
  • Work cooperatively with the Collection Management Supervisor to develop enhancements to service coverage, carry out workflow analysis, and make process and service improvements that impact both Public Services and Technical Services.
  • Research and recommend facilities and equipment replacements and upgrades.

Services (10%)

  • Establish priorities within the Circulation and Technical Services departments for processing gift collections; assign looseleaf filing and otherwise apportion clerical work between departments, make selection decisions for the Casual Reading Collection and maintain other specialty collections.

Projects (10%)

  • Lead, coordinate, and assess complex projects involving Circulation and Interlibrary Loan services utilizing OCLC Worldshare and the ALMA Library Services Platform.
