THE BOOK CLUB PLAY

SYNOPSIS: For Ana Smith, Book Club is the one place she can truly be herself: Confident, organized, intellectual, and most importantly, in charge. She especially loves leading the stimulating conversations with her husband Rob, their best friends Will and Jen, and her protégé Lily, as they devour classics like The Age of Innocence and Moby Dick. But when Ana agrees to allow a famous director to record their meetings for a documentary film, the safe space of Book Club is shattered, while an opinionated newcomer threatens to alter the group dynamic for good. Karen Zacarías’ delightful comedy celebrates
the simple joy of reading—from Wuthering Heights to Twilight, and everything in between.

SEEKING:

ANA SMITH: Female-Identifying, Latina, 30s. Pronounced “Ah-nuh.” Beautiful. Charming. Smart. Accomplished. Organized. A columnist for a daily paper. The “Mother Bee.” Her grace masks a need to control.

ROBERT NOVUM SMITH JR: Male-Identifying, any race or ethnicity, 30s. ANA’s golden-boy handsome, charismatic, underachiever husband who is starting to search for meaning. Met in college. Upper-crust background. Doubles as SAM, the Wal-Mart guy.

WILLIAM LEENOTHINGEL: Male-Identifying, any race or ethnicity, 30s. ROB’s conservative, well-read, well-dressed, disciplined college roommate. ANA’s former boyfriend. History buff. Unmarried. Doubles as FRANK, a Secret Service agent.

JENNIFER McCLINTOCK: Female-Identifying, a person of color, 30s. ANA’s friend. Pretty. Shy. Smart. Tends to burst out with awkward truthful comments. Despite some lack of self-confidence, she is the grounding center of the group. Unorganized and oblivious to her own attractiveness. Unmarried. Doubles as ELSA, a jaded literary agent.

LILY LOUISE JACKSON: Female-Identifying, Black, 20s. A go-getter. Former debate captain who is on thecusp of all current trends and yet can still put her foot in her mouth at social occasions. Laughs at appropriate and inappropriate times. A great lover of books and ANA’s protégé at the paper. Doubles as MRS. SIMPSON, a skydiver.

ALEX: Male-Identifying, Black, 30s. The new guy. A very smart, well-read academic who has lost his moorings and is searching for real connections. Professor of comparative literature. Doubles as CARL, an inmate book dealer.
