The Syracuse City School District represents 35 schools and programs, including 6 high schools, 6 middle schools, 6 K-8 schools, 13 elementary schools, and 4 alternative education programs, serving approximately 19,000 students Pre-K–12. Of these students, 82.3% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, 20.1% are served by the Office of Special Education, and 83% are students of color.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves performing skilled journeyman level work in the installation, maintenance and repair of high and low pressure steam lines, HVAC, and refrigeration equipment. Employees are responsible for determining materials and work methods used and on occasion, may supervise unskilled or semi‑skilled labor. Assignments are oral or written, sometimes accompanied by sketches from an administrative superior. Work is inspected during process and upon completion for compliance to specification and adherence to codes. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
- Removes, repairs and replaces worn or damaged steam, refrigeration and other pipelines by methods of welding, brazing, threading or mechanical joining;
- Removes, repairs, and replaces, and installs pipeline hangers and supports;
- Grinds, reseats and rebuilds valves, strainers and mechanical devices associated with HVAC and refrigeration systems;
- Repairs, replaces, rebuilds, and maintains pumps, steams and equipment traps and controlling devices;
- Makes estimations and keeps records of time and materials.
FULL PEFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
- Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools of the steamfitting trade.
- Thorough knowledge of flows, pressures and capacities of various HVAC systems.
- Thorough knowledge of methods and materials needed in maintaining HVAC and refrigeration systems.
- Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions used in the steamfitting industry.
- Skill in the use and care of tools, materials, and equipment of the trade.
- Ability to understand and work from general instructions, blueprints and sketches.
- Ability to make time and material estimates.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of High School or equivalency program, and; Possession of current Journeyman level Steamfitter license.
SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT
Depending upon the area of assignment, candidates may be required to hold EPA Certification at the appropriate level for the type of equipment used.
WORKING HOURS: This position will work 40 hours per week, 12 months per year. This position is full-time. This position is non-exempt.
SALARY: The current starting salary for this position is $42.61 per hour per the Unit 5 contract.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ideal candidates have HVAC technician experience serving a wide range of HVAC equipment.
- To be considered, all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the position as outlined on the Onondaga County Civil Service job specifications for this title.
