Key Responsibilities
The Psychiatric ER CNA will provide compassionate, patient-centered care to individuals in the psychiatric emergency room, assisting with daily activities and supporting nursing staff in delivering quality mental health care. This role requires excellent communication skills, the ability to remain calm under pressure, and a strong understanding of mental health conditions and crises.
Key Responsibilities
- Patient Care: Assist patients with daily living activities, such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and mobility, in a safe and respectful manner.
- Monitoring & Observation: Monitor patients' physical and emotional states, noting any significant changes and reporting to nursing staff or physicians.
- Safety: Ensure patient safety by observing behavior, de-escalating potentially volatile situations, and following facility protocols for managing aggressive behavior or self-harm.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records of patient conditions, treatments, and interactions, ensuring documentation is clear, timely, and in compliance with facility policies.
- Collaboration: Work closely with psychiatric nurses, doctors, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to implement patient care plans.
- Supportive Interaction: Offer emotional support to patients in distress, providing a calm and therapeutic environment.
- Crisis Intervention: Assist in managing psychiatric emergencies, including providing direct support during de-escalation techniques or restraint procedures, in accordance with facility protocols.
- Cleanliness & Organization: Ensure patient rooms and surroundings are clean and organized, following all health and safety guidelines.
- Education: High school diploma or GED required. CNA certification.
- Experience: Prior experience in a healthcare setting, particularly in psychiatric care or emergency departments.
- Certifications:
- Current CNA certification in the state of practice.
- CPR and First Aid certification (required or willingness to obtain upon hire).
- Skills:
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and staff.
- Strong understanding of mental health disorders and behaviors.
- Ability to work under pressure and respond to emergencies in a calm and professional manner.
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology and practices.
- Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift and move patients, stand for long periods, and assist with patient mobility.
- Comfort working in environments that may involve physical or emotional challenges.
