What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veterinary Technician/Technician in Training position at Syosset Animal Hospital?
The veterinary technician is the primary support to veterinarians and patients. The veterinary technician must be able to pay attention to detail, respond quickly and calmly to crises, and maintain very high standards of patient care. In addition, the veterinary technician must be able to communicate well with clients, showing care and concern for their pets.
JOB TASKS/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Must be licensed or enrolled in an accredited licensing program.
- All tasks, such as (but not limited to) medication, treatments, fluids, food, etc. must be performed according to Veterinarians orders
- Must be able to perform all job tasks/essential functions assigned to veterinary assistant.
- Be familiar with and follow hospital rules and regulations according to the employee handbook.
- Exemplify the hospital mission statement.
- Counsel clients regarding home care, medication administration, post-operative care
- Provide client education regarding nutrition, parasite control, vaccination protocols, spaying and neutering in addition to other services provided by the hospital and its staff.
- Take, develop and record radiographs
- Perform catheterizations
- Give injections in accordance with veterinarians orders
- Perform in house lab procedures including cytology, ear mite microscopic exam, skin scrapings, and heartworm, felv/fiv, heartworm/lyme, erlichia tests
- Administer and monitor anesthesia in accordance with state regulations
- Perform routine dental cleanings in accordance with state regulations
- Assist in surgery as needed
- Administer oral drugs, wound dressings, and fluid therapy
- Assist the receptionists in order to ensure patient flow is handled so that the client feels comfortable before, during and after treatment of their pet(s)
- Maintain pharmacy records
- Perform emergency procedures including: control bleeding; administer parenteral fluids and pharmacological agents; resuscitate with oxygen; establish open airway by intubation; perform external cardiac massage; apply temporary bandages or splints; provide external supportive treatment of wounds, burns, and heat prostration under veterinary supervision.
- Provide physical therapy
- Perform tasks assigned to Veterinary Technician as needed
- Works with Vet Assistants to make sure all client cares and needs are being addressed
- Perform other duties as assigned
CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
- Participate in all educational veterinary and team building seminars scheduled in the clinic.
- May attend outside veterinary industry educational class or seminars. Give requests to Technical Supervisor to obtain approval before registering. (If licensed, maintain the proper amount of credit hours to meet state regulations.)
