Job Overview
We are hiring a motivated and hands-on Fabrication & Digital Design Intern to support our team in producing high-quality prototypes, components, and design solutions. Interns will primarily support the Synthesis team, contributing to the development, design, and fabrication of innovative architectural elements. Additionally, there may be opportunities to collaborate on select Architecture and Engineering projects through EDG, offering a well-rounded experience across various disciplines.
Candidates should be able to commit 16-20 hours per week, with the possibility of the role expanding into a full-time position.
This position is ideal for candidates eager to gain hands-on experience across digital and physical fabrication. Successful interns are comfortable navigating between design software, digital fabrication tools, and manual shop equipment, while contributing creative thinking and practical problem-solving skills.
Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor small and large-format 3D printers and associated fabrication equipment;
- Prepare print jobs, including loading materials, setting up build plates, and conducting test prints;
- Perform routine maintenance, calibration, and basic troubleshooting of printing equipment;
- Support simple digital production tasks such as slicer software setup and basic CAD file edits;
- Support preparation of printed components for post-production and finishing;
- Assist in logistics and packaging parts for delivery, shipping, or installation;
- Assist in maintaining a clean, safe, and organized shop environment, including tools and material storage;
- Assist in fabrication of support material for installation and integration of components, which will involve the use of shop tools and equipment.
Qualifications:
- Pursuing or holding a degree in Architecture, Industrial Design, Product Design, Structural Engineering, or a related field; strong 4th- or 5th-year candidates encouraged.
- Experience in fabrication, including both digital fabrication tools and hands-on use of shop equipment.
- Comfortable performing physical fabrication tasks as well as digital design work.
Compensation
- Hourly rate: $20-30, depending on education level and prior experience.
