Position Summary
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy machinery used in loading, unloading, and moving cargo within a busy port environment. This role supports daily terminal operations by ensuring the timely and accurate handling of containers, bulk materials, and general freight.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate heavy equipment such as:
- Front-end loaders
- Excavators
- Dozers
- Skid steers and similar machinery
- Load and unload cargo from vessels, trucks, and railcars safely and efficiently.
- Move freight, containers, and materials throughout the terminal as directed.
- Conduct pre- and post-operation inspections; report any mechanical issues immediately.
- Follow all port safety protocols, OSHA standards, and equipment operating procedures.
- Maintain accurate logs related to equipment usage, cargo movement, and job tickets.
- Communicate with supervisors, signalers, and dock personnel to coordinate movements.
- Assist with securing cargo, staging freight, and general terminal duties.
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and navigate busy, high-traffic areas.
Qualifications
-Proven experience operating heavy equipment in a port, warehouse, industrial, or construction environment.
-Valid equipment certifications (e.g., forklift, crane, heavy machinery) preferred.
-Ability to operate multiple types of machinery safely.
-Strong understanding of safety procedures and situational awareness.
-Ability to lift 50 lbs and work on feet for extended periods.
-Willingness to work flexible schedules including nights, weekends, and overtime when required.
