Job Overview
An established healthcare organization in a vibrant coastal community is seeking a skilled and compassionate Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) to join its dynamic surgical services team. In this essential role, the RNFA provides expert perioperative nursing care, assists surgeons during procedures, and helps ensure optimal patient outcomes through collaboration, clinical expertise, and a commitment to excellence in patient-centered care.
The ideal candidate is a clinically competent professional nurse with proven experience in the perioperative environment and a strong ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary surgical team.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver comprehensive perioperative care to surgical patients.
- Perform first assistant duties such as tissue handling, wound exposure, suturing, and hemostasis.
- Anticipate the surgeon’s needs and assist efficiently throughout procedures.
- Maintain strict aseptic technique and ensure compliance with infection control protocols.
- Support preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative patient care using critical thinking and sound clinical judgment.
- Operate and maintain sterilization equipment (autoclaves, steris units), performing required biological tests and documentation.
- Handle, clean, and prepare surgical instruments and supplies in accordance with established guidelines.
- Accurately document all aspects of intraoperative care, including counts, patient positioning, and interventions.
- Participate in maintaining up-to-date surgical preference cards and assist with workflow efficiency between procedures.
- Provide cost-effective care through proper use of resources and accurate patient charge documentation.
- Ensure compliance with all accreditation and regulatory standards.
Requirements
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Certification or formal training as a Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA).
- Demonstrated knowledge and application of the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration within a surgical team.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and perform under pressure in critical situations.
- Experience using electronic health record (EHR) systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of one (1) year of recent perioperative experience as an RNFA or in a surgical nursing role.
- Experience in a hospital or acute care setting.
