The Symetra Public Affairsand Social Impactinternship exposes candidates to the intersection of external affairs, public policy, and community engagement. Ideal candidates will have a demonstrated interest in public policy and mission-driven work,along with a commitment to community engagement and impact. Participants will assist with all aspects of the Public Affairs (PA) and Social Impact (SI) department, including external engagement, event help, and project support; availability may be needed for in-person as well as virtual tasks.
The internship duration is 12 weeks from late January to May.
Your responsibilities may include
- Helping Community Relations with employee engagement events to support nonprofits or support sports partnerships
- Drafting community event invitations and coordinating participant responses
- Assist with data collection for Symetra Social Impact
- Conducting research, summarizing legislation, tracking current events, and writing policy briefs
- Watching government and community webinars and hearings, synthesizing key points and circulating notesinternally
- Assisting team members during conferences and meetings, including the tracking and summarizing of meetings and events with federal, state, and local policymakers
Interns gain skills in: effective increased knowledge of and experience with corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. communications, policy analysis, stakeholder engagement, research, and writing skills.
Your education, experience, and skills
- A rising junior or senior student seeking a degree from an accredited higher education program
- Demonstrated interest in social impact, community relations, employee engagement, corporate philanthropy, public policy, communication(s), corporate responsibility or public affairs
- Preference for students with leadership experiences such as volunteering or helping others
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Willingness and ability to collaborate and adapt in a fast-paced, solution-driven environment
- Knowledge and interest in public policy, current events and government, community stakeholder engagement
- Ability to participate in-person on behalf of Symetra at external and internal events in the Bellevue and Seattle area
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and virtual conferencing
- Strong organization skills and attention to detail
